The Château Nénin is among the most appreciated and unavoidable wines of the Pomerol appellation. Its origins date back to the 18th century with the Demay family, then passed into the hands of the Paillet and Despujol families, respectively in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was only in 1997 that it was acquired by the Delon family, owners of Château Léoville Las Cases in the Médoc. Numerous restructuring works have been undertaken, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, in order to restore the property's reputation and to place it among the most distinguished crus of Pomerol. Jean-Hubert Delon is now at the helm.
The Château Nénin watches over a 32-hectare vineyard in a single block except for a single parcel, planted on gravel and clay soils with iron crasses in depth, bringing a singular aromatic profile to the wines. The grape varieties are 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. The wines are aged for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, the percentage of new wood of which varies according to the vintage.
The property produces a Second wine, Fugue de Nénin, with as much care and precision as its older sibling.
The Château Nénin is a very big Domaine of Pomerol. Its wines are racy, powerful and complex, where freshness and purity of fruit are expressed.
Fugue de Nénin 2021 draws its character from vines grown on sandy-clay soils, which give it early drinkability and great accessibility, as well as from young plots located on the iconic Pomerol plateau. With 32 hectares of vineyards in production, Château Nénin cultivates a mosaic of terroirs typical of the appellation: Oligocene deposits covered with alluvial gravel carried by the Dordogne River, siliceous clay and gravel, quartz, granite, iron crust, and basalt pebbles.
The 2021 vintage, which was both early and late, was marked by a mild, wet winter, allowing for uniform bud break. However, the growing season put the vineyard to the test, requiring meticulous work to limit the impact of hazards, particularly frost. Thanks to rigorous management, the grapes were able to achieve slow but high-quality phenolic ripening. The gravelly terroir, particularly on the plateau, played a key role in forcing the vines to refine the smooth ripeness of the Merlot and the intrinsic elegance of the Cabernet Franc.
Fugue de Nénin 2021 is delicate and lively, with a freshness that makes it a wine to be enjoyed immediately. Its blend, composed of 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, was harvested from September 23 to October 2, 2021. With an alcohol content of 13.00%, total acidity of 3.30 gH₂SO₄/l, pH of 3.50, and IPT of 60, this wine combines balance and finesse for a taste that is both indulgent and refined.
