What makes Le Clos des Papes so special is its ability to combine tradition and innovation. Paul-Vincent Avril, while remaining faithful to ancestral methods, does not hesitate to modernize his techniques to express the best of his terroir. Le Domaine covers around 30 hectares, with vines aged from 40 to 100 years, spread over several types of soil, from pebbles to clay-limestone. This diversity produces a range of highly complex wines, both powerful and fine.
The flagship wine of Domaine, Châteauneuf-du-Pape Clos des Papes, is a blend dominated by Grenache, supported by Syrah, Mourvèdre and other grape varieties authorized in the appellation. This wine is renowned for its depth, elegance and ageing potential. It is distinguished by a complex aromatic richness, blending notes of black fruit, spices, garrigue and licorice, all wrapped up in a silky texture and perfectly controlled freshness.
Visually, Clos des Papes 2021 Rouge has a deep red color with purplish highlights, a sign of its youth and vitality. The nose is intense and highly aromatic, with aromas of perfectly ripe black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant), combined with notes of sweet spices (cinnamon, black pepper) and a touch of garrigue (rosemary, thyme) that add a Mediterranean dimension to the bouquet. Aeration reveals nuances of licorice and leather, adding depth and complexity.
On the palate, the attack is supple, but quickly supported by a fine, well-integrated tannic structure. The texture is velvety, with a fine concentration of fruit, including black fruit aromas, accompanied by spicy nuances and a hint of dark chocolate. Freshness and well-controlled acidity bring tension and precision, while the long finish is characterized by a beautiful persistence of fruit and spice, with a hint of minerality that underlines the terroir of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
