Guigal has long been synonymous with excellence and renown in the Rhône Valley, and its iconic wines are recognized around the world for their exceptional quality and distinctive character. Founded by Étienne Guigal in 1946, this family-run business has managed to pRéserver a remarkable winegrowing heritage and pass it on from generation to generation.
Among Guigal's signature wines are those of Côte-Rôtie, an appellation that represents the very essence of Domaine. Côte-Rôtie is famous for its steeply terraced vineyards, schist soils and continental climate. The resulting red wines are elegant, powerful and complex. Guigal offers several Côte-Rôtie cuvées, including the famous "La Mouline", "La Turque" and "La Landonne". These wines are refined expressions of Syrah, with seductive aromas of black fruits, spices, violets and licorice, as well as a remarkable tannic structure. They are renowned for their ability to age for many years, developing additional complexity and depth.
Another iconic Guigal wine is Hermitage, a prestigious appellation located on a hill overlooking the town of Tain-l'Hermitage. E. Guigal La Mouline 1999 is a legendary wine from the terraced vineyards of Côte Blonde, one of the most emblematic terroirs of Domaine Guigal.
This cuvée is made from 89% Syrah and 11% Viognier, from vines averaging 70 years old. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, with traditional pumping-over and 4-week maceration, followed by 42 months of exceptional ageing in new barrels, giving the wine remarkable aromatic depth and an inimitable silky texture.
Its deep garnet-red color with tiled highlights bears witness to its harmonious evolution. The intense, evolved nose reveals aromas of stewed black fruit (plum, blackcurrant), delicate floral notes of violet and faded rose, complemented by tertiary nuances of leather, blond tobacco, truffle and oriental spices.
On the palate, the attack is full and velvety, with mellow tannins and beautiful aromatic complexity. The long, persistent finish stretches out on notes of cocoa, liquorice and precious woods, offering a perfect balance between opulence and finesse.
This grand vin de garde, which has reached full maturity but can still evolve over 10 to 15 years, should be served between 16 and 18°C.
It is an ideal accompaniment to refined, complex dishes, such as hare à la royale, coq au vin from an old recipe, or marinated Wagyu beef, where its aromatic depth and satiny texture reveal its full potential.
