Domaine Delas Frères is a true Rhone Valley institution, renowned for the quality and finesse of its wines since it was founded in 1835.
Located in Tournon-sur-Rhône, in the heart of this prestigious wine region, Delas is an emblematic Domaine that has reinvented itself while respecting tradition. This subtle marriage of modernity and heritage is reflected in the precision and elegance of the wines produced, particularly in flagship appellations such as Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph.
One of the pillars of Domaine Delas is the importance given to terroir. The region's soils, mainly granitic and schistose, bring a remarkable minerality to the wines, as well as a solid structure. The Mediterranean climate, influenced by the Mistral, favors optimal ripening of the grapes while preserving their freshness. Delas cultivates vines on steep, often terraced hillsides, making viticulture demanding but allowing the unique characteristics of each plot to be fully captured.
Domaine makes it a point of honor to vinify each plot separately, in order to respect the typicity of each terroir. The result is wines that faithfully reflect their geographical origin. With this 2020 "Les Bessards" vintage, Delas Frères pays tribute to one of the most iconic and demanding terroirs in the Rhône Valley, the very backbone of the Hermitage appellation. In this legendary vineyard, where the vines cling to austere, perfectly drained granite terraces, the Syrah sinks its roots deep into the soil to deliver an expression of rare intensity. Here, the soil’s constraints forge the wine’s character: a restrained, vertical, almost telluric power that seems to emanate directly from the rock.
The 2020 vintage, marked by extreme weather conditions, produced concentrated yet balanced grapes with surprisingly soft tannins. Vinified with precision and restraint in extraction, then aged extensively in barrels, the wine retains all the purity of its origin, without artifice.
In its youth, “Les Bessards” impresses with its depth and density. The nose, still reserved, hints at dark notes of black fruit, graphite, and spices—the signature of great granite Hermitage wines. On the palate, the texture is compact and structured, supported by a mineral backbone and tight, highly noble tannins. It is with time that this wine reveals its full potential. As it evolves, it unfolds a fascinating complexity, where secondary and then tertiary aromas emerge, unveiling a deeper, almost mystical palette. The whole gains in harmony and emotional depth, offering a tasting experience marked by slowness and contemplation.
A great wine for aging, “Les Bessards” 2020 embodies a demanding and authentic vision of the terroir: a wine sculpted by nature, time, and the hand of man, where raw power gradually gives way to a solemn and timeless elegance.
