The Château Léoville Barton is one of the must-have references in the Saint-Julien appellation. It was in 1725 that Thomas Barton, an Irishman by birth, settled in Bordeaux and founded his own wine trading company.
Then in 1826, Hugh Barton, already owner of Château Langoa Barton to Saint-Julien, acquired part of Léoville's Domaine, which he renamed Léoville Barton. In the famous 1855 classification, Château Léoville Barton was given the title Second Grand Cru Classé. Today, the Barton family is still at the helm of Domaine, making it the oldest family still owning a Cru Classé from Bordeaux.
The 50-hectare vineyard is planted on gravel-clay soils facing the Gironde estuary, with 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. The wines are aged for 18 months in 60% new barrels.
The Domaine produces a Second wine, the Réserve de Léoville Barton.
The Château Léoville Barton reveals itself to be a wine of great subtlety, complex and seductive. A nectar that deserves to improve for a few years to reveal an even more grandiose face.
A marvelous Saint-Julien born under great climatic conditions during all seasons and harvested in 2005, an exceptional vintage.
The color is almost black with some fine dark purple reflections.
On the nose as well as on the palate, numerous touches of red berries such as blackcurrant, black cherry burlat, morello cherry jam and walnut, touches of undergrowth, and spices such as black and white peppers, clove and cinnamon, toasted.
It is one of the most critically acclaimed vintage wines to be kept in the cellar for several decades, to be opened to measure its qualitative evolution after aging in the cellar, bottle lying down, protected from light and noise with a hygrometric degree of about 70%.
Decant several hours before serving.
