Synonymous with aromatic finesse and elegance, Château Léoville Poyferré lies to the north of the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation. It was created in 1840 following the various divisions of Domaine de Léoville, and became the property of Baron de Poyferré, who added his name to it.
It was crowned Second Grand Cru Classé in the prestigious 1855 classification. The Cuvelier family, wine merchants, acquired it in 1920. For 40 years, Didier Cuvelier has led the restructuring of the vineyard, respecting the environment and the terroir. His cousin Sara Lecompte Cuvelier took over the reins in 2018.
The vineyard covers 58 hectares of vines, planted with 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet franc. The wines are aged entirely in oak barrels, 80% of which are new, over a period of 18 to 20 months.
Le Pavillon de Poyferré, Second wine of Domaine, is made mainly from Merlot.
The Château Léoville Poyferré is a sublime wine, offering plenty of power and body without losing its subtlety.
This vintage, although marked by difficult weather conditions, reveals great finesse and complexity. La robe is a deep purple, almost opaque, suggesting great concentration. On the nose, it reveals a rich, harmonious bouquet of black fruit aromas such as blackcurrant and blackberry, accompanied by notes of cedar, licorice and light tobacco. A subtle touch of graphite, the signature of the great Saint-Julien, completes this olfactory ensemble.
On the palate, the Château Léoville Poyferré 2017 offers a clean, precise attack, followed by a solid yet elegant tannic structure. The tannins are fine and well integrated, giving the wine a silky texture and beautiful amplitude. Perfectly balanced acidity brings freshness and dynamism, while the finish is long, marked by flavors of black fruit, sweet spices and a light woody touch.
Ideal with characterful dishes such as roast rack of lamb, grilled prime rib or game birds. The Château Léoville Poyferré 2017 is a wine of great class, combining power and refinement, which will seduce demanding wine lovers.
