Synonymous with aromatic finesse and elegance, Château Léoville Poyferré lies to the north of the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation. It was created in 1840 following the various divisions of Domaine de Léoville, and became the property of Baron de Poyferré, who added his name to it.
It was crowned Second Grand Cru Classé in the prestigious 1855 classification. The Cuvelier family, wine merchants, acquired it in 1920. For 40 years, Didier Cuvelier has led the restructuring of the vineyard, respecting the environment and the terroir. His cousin Sara Lecompte Cuvelier took over the reins in 2018.
The vineyard covers 58 hectares of vines, planted with 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet franc. The wines are aged entirely in oak barrels, 80% of which are new, over a period of 18 to 20 months.
Le Pavillon de Poyferré, Second wine of Domaine, is made mainly from Merlot.
The Château Léoville Poyferré is a sublime wine, offering plenty of power and body without losing its subtlety.
The wine has an intense ruby color with slightly brick-red highlights. The nose gradually opens up to reveal elegant aromas of ripe blackcurrant, black cherry, and plum, accompanied by notes of cedar, blond tobacco, and graphite. With aeration, more complex nuances of cigar box, sweet spices, cocoa beans and a subtle floral touch reminiscent of violets appear. On the palate, the attack is frank and structured. The wine has a beautiful tannic structure, still present but perfectly integrated, reflecting careful aging. The mid-palate is full-bodied, carried by precise black fruit and a freshness characteristic of the 2011 vintage, which brings balance and tension. The woody notes are mellow and support the substance without dominating it. The finish is persistent and elegant, marked by accents of licorice, black pepper, and a slight minerality.
