The traces of the existence of this Château go back to the 13th century but it was not until 1618 that it took the name of its owner at the time Peyraguey. It was only later, after it had been sold as a national asset at the time of the French Revolution, that its new owner added his name Lafaurie.
It is a Premier Cru Classified of Sauternes according to the prestigious 1855 list given to Emperor Napoléon III.
The vineyard, with an average age of 45 years, extends over some forty hectares on a soil of Quaternary gravel and clay-limestone, an essential presence to achieve this masterpiece of Nature. Grape varieties: Semillon 90%, Sauvignon 8% and Muscadelle 2%. The production is around 98,000 bottles depending on the year, which is a very low yield but high quality of 2300 bottles per hectare.
The wine is aged in barrels, 33% of which are new barrels for 18 to 23 months.before bottling.
All the grapes are harvested by hand and operated by successive sorting in the vineyard and in the cellar in order to optimize the quality of the berries by verifying their state of maturation.
The Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey 2017, Premier Grand Cru Classé de Sauternes, is a wine composed of 95% Semillon, 5% Sauvignon Blanc and 1% Muscadelle. Cultivated on a siliceous-gravel terroir, it benefits from integrated viticulture and hand-picking in several successive stages.
Vinification and ageing in French oak barrels (40 to 70% new) for 18 to 20 months bring great complexity. With an annual production of 40,000 bottles, this vintage offers candied fruit aromas and a rich, opulent palate, with a long finish. An elegant wine to keep.
