History and highlights

Littlemill began on the site of a brewery dating back to the 1750s, before obtaining its official license in 1773, becoming Scotland's first legal distillery. Its history has been marked by many twists and turns: rebuilt in 1875, it has been closed and reopened several times, notably in 1931 under the leadership of Duncan Thomas, an innovative American. Thomas introduced revolutionary techniques such as double distillation and the use of rectification columns, enabling the production of three styles of single malt: the classic Littlemill (light and fruity), Dunglass (lightly peated), and Dumbuck (heavily peated).

In 1994, the distillery closed its doors for good, but its stocks continue to be bottled by Loch Lomond Distillery, offering limited editions that are highly sought after by collectors.

Production characteristics

Littlemill stood out for its innovative approach:

• Triple distillation until 1931, then a switch to double distillation with aluminum-coated copper stills equipped with rectification columns for greater control over the aromatic profile.
• Pure water from the Kilpatrick Hills, giving its whiskies their characteristic smoothness.
• Bold experimentation: use of Saladin boxes for malting, and production of whiskies with varied profiles, from the lightest to the most peaty.

Iconic products

Littlemill bottles have become cult objects, notably:

• Littlemill 12 Year Old: The best-known official expression, smooth and floral, ideal for discovering the distillery.
• Littlemill 25 Year Old Private Cellar: A rare limited edition, aged in bourbon and sherry casks, offering notes of vanilla, honey, and sweet spices.
• Dumbuck and Dunglass: Experimental whiskies, one heavily peated and the other lightly peated, now impossible to find but legendary.

Independent bottlings (such as those from Douglas Laing or Cadenhead's) are also highly prized, often scoring above 15/20 by experts.
