Masseto

Although Masseto is a name intimately linked to Domaine Ornellaia, it stands out for its uniqueness and prestige, embodying the excellence of Merlot in the Bolgheri region.

The story goes back to the 1980s, when Ornellaia winemakers identified a specific parcel of clay soil within Domaine, suitable for growing Merlot. This particular parcel, named Masseto, quickly attracted attention thanks to the exceptional quality of its grapes. It wasn't until 1986 that Masseto was vinified for the first time as a wine in its own right, marking the beginning of its ascent to the heights of the wine world.

The family behind this remarkable achievement is that of Marchesa Maria Carmela della Rocchetta. This family, owners of Ornellaia, played an essential role in the development as an exceptional wine. The family's vision and dedication to quality have propelled Masseto onto the international stage, making it one of the most sought-after wines in the world.

The vineyard covers a relatively modest area, but every hectare is cultivated with meticulous attention. The Merlot plot is carefully selected for its unique characteristics, including sun exposure, clay soil and privileged position within Domaine Ornellaia. This area-limited approach allows us to focus attention on quality rather than quantity.

The grape variety is exclusively Merlot, a choice that defies convention in a region where Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are often used in blends. However, the decision to focus solely on Merlot was a wise one, as Masseto's specific climate and terroir allow this grape variety to express itself exceptionally well, giving rise to wines of unrivalled Rare elegance and depth.

Masseto has become synonymous with greatness in the world of wine, symbolizing the perfect union of terroir, climate and oenological know-how. The Rare quality of production and high demand have elevated Masseto to the status of a collector's wine, sought after by connoisseurs the world over.
