It was Florens-Louis Heidsieck, a native of Westphalia, who founded the cloth and wine trading house of Champagne Heidsieck et Cie in 1785 in Reims. He even had the privilege of presenting his wine to the French Queen Marie-Antoinette.

When Florens-Louis Heidsieck died in 1828, it was his nephew Christian Heidsieck who continued the business in partnership with Henri-Guillaume Piper. The house took off but in 1835 Christian Heidsieck died and it was then that his wife remarried to Henri-Guillaume Piper who gave his name to the house, henceforth naming it Piper-Heidsieck.
