Château Kirwan
Le Château Kirwan is a beautiful property in the heart of the Margaux vineyard. It was built at the end of the 18th century by Mark Kirwan, an Irish businessman, who received Domaine when he married the daughter of then-owner John Collingwood, a merchant in Bordeaux. Thomas Jefferson, US ambassador to France, praised it in his travel notes in 1787.
Le Château became a Third Grand Cru Classé in 1855, at the time of the famous classification published for the Paris Universal Exhibition. It was acquired by the Bordeaux trading house Schröder & Schÿler in 1926, the Schÿlers being of Hanseatic origin. Today, Sophie, Nathalie and Yann Schÿler are at the helm of the estate, working with the best viticultural and oenological consultants to optimize the excellence of their wines.
The vineyard covers 37 hectares on Pyrenean gravel and sandy-gravel soils, and is planted with 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot. The wines are aged for 18 to 21 months in oak barrels, 33% of which are new.
The estate produces a Second wine, Charmes de Kirwan.
The wines of Château Kirwan are known for their finesse and freshness, where purity of fruit rubs shoulders with precision and balance.

Description Château Kirwan 2014.
The 2014 vintage in the Bordeaux vineyard had several contrasting climatic episodes. The warm and sunny spring allowed a beautiful flowering of the vines. The summer was generally rather cool, but thanks to the magnificent after-season in September and October, marked by a lot of sunshine, the grape varieties were able to perfect their maturity.
Blend of the 2014 vintage : 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc
It reveals in the glass a beautiful deep, dark red color with elegant garnet and orange highlights.
The nose offers a very expressive bouquet of black fruits, blackberry, vanilla wood and truffle.
The attack on the palate is very delicate, the wine revealing very quickly density and juicy flesh. The fine and well-integrated tannins make it rise crescendo in aromatic power and give it a beautiful balance. The finish is particularly long, aromatic and persistent.
Food and wine pairing:
Château Kirwan 2014 can be paired with many traditional dishes including beef en croûte, pan-fried veal kidneys with mustard, roast duck with porcini mushroom sauce, or salmis de palombe.
It goes very well with uncooked pressed cheeses such as morbier, Saint-Nectaire, cantal and matured mimolette.
Finish it off with a delicious chocolate dessert: a half-baked fondant, a ganache or a pear-chocolate Bavarois.
Cellaring potential and tasting:
Château Kirwan 2014 can wait in the cellar for another 5 years, reaching its peak between 2028 and 2030. It can of course be enjoyed now, by opening and decanting the bottle 3 to 4 hours before tasting.
The bottles will be kept in the cellar protected from the light, lying down, at an optimal hygrometric degree of 70%.
