The Château Léoville Barton is one of the must-have references of the Saint-Julien appellation. It was in 1725 that Thomas Barton, an Irishman by birth, settled in Bordeaux and founded his own wine trading company. Then in 1826, Hugh Barton, already owner of Château Langoa Barton to Saint-Julien, acquired part of Domaine of Léoville, which he renamed Léoville Barton. During the famous classification of 1855, Château Léoville Barton obtained the title of Sec or Grand Cru Classé. To this day, the Barton family is still in charge of Domaine, making them the oldest family still owning a Cru Classé of Bordeaux.
The 50-hectare vineyard sits on gravel-clay soils facing the Gironde estuary, planted to 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. The wines are aged 18 months in 60% new barrels.
The Domaine produces a Second wine, the Réserve of Léoville Barton.
The Château Léoville Barton proves to be a wine of great subtlety, complex and showing seduction. A nectar that deserves to improve for a few years to reveal an even more grandiose face.
