In the 12th century, traces of this Château can already be found in the Archives of the Arsac seigneury, owned by the de Montaigne family, the famous French writer and Mayor of Bordeaux in the 16th century.
It borders Châteaux Cantenac-Brown and Brane-Cantenac to the north and Château Giscours to the east. It is situated on one of the Médoc's highest gravelly hilltops, from which it takes its name. Its vineyard is remarkable for two reasons: it's in one piece and it faces due south.
It's a fifth Grand Cru Classé following the prestigious 1855 list.
Varietal composition: Cabernet Sauvignon: 45, Merlot 30%, Cabernet Franc 20% and 5% Petit Verdot.
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, and annual production is in the order of 255 barrels, or around 300,000 bottles.
50% of the wine is aged in new barrels for an average of 18 months, depending on the typicity of the harvest.
It was in 1855, thanks to the classification, that Château acquired a certain notoriety. Today, meticulous care in both vineyard and cellar has resulted in a high level of quality. The nose of this Du Tertre 2016 offers a charming, harmonious bouquet of blackberry and raspberry. A hint of minerality is perceptible after aeration, reminiscent of gunflint. On the palate, the attack is fresh and elegant. The mid-palate is full and reveals finely chiselled tannins. The finish is very expressive, dominated by fresh blueberry aromas that linger for a long time.
