Château Cantenac-Brown

Château Cantenac-Brown

Located in the heart of the Margaux appellation, Château Cantenac Brown is a magnificent Tudor-style estate unique in the Médoc. It was founded by Scottish businessman John Lewis Brown, who bought Domaine in 1803 and entrusted it with this architectural inspiration.

The Château Cantenac Brown will be classified Third Grand Cru Classé in 1855 during the official classification for the Paris Universal Exhibition.

Owned by the Le Lous Family since 2019, the vineyard, situated on magnificent gravel soils conducive to producing great wines, is planted on 60 hectares with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The wines are aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new. A Second wine is produced, Brio de Cantenac Brown.

Since 2011, Château owns 1.80 ha planted to 90% Sauvignon blanc and 10% Sémillon, giving birth to their white wine: Alto de Cantenac Brown.

Very committed to the environment, a new, eco-responsible, all-raw-earth winery is currently under construction for the estate. It will be delivered for the 2023 harvest.

The wines of Château Cantenac deliver a perfect representation of the very best Margaux, opulent, fine and deliciously complex.

Description Château Cantenac Brown 2023.

THE MILLENNIUM

2023 was a warm year overall, wet at times but not excessively so, with a few cold spells. The season begins with a hot and slightly humid cycle, with rains at the end of June, requiring the team to be present on a daily basis for green harvesting and protection of the vineyard against mildew.

This was followed by a drier period, with a few very localized thunderstorms, requiring precise management of each plot, each row, each vine. Flowering is rapid and complete for all grape varieties. Veraison got off to a slower start, but the heat of late August and early September brought with it the perfect ripeness of the grapes. Two fine showers in September finished off the magnificent Cabernet Sauvignon.

TASTING NOTES

Cantenac Brown 2023 reflects the precision of this vintage, piloted from start to finish with the utmost care by the technical team. Its velvety, charming and radiant character will take you to the heart of our terroir.

La robe dense and rich, it leaves an indelible mark on wines and spirits alike. The bewitching aromas of red fruits and their complexity captivate the senses, while the mouth, taut and generous, reveals a delicious opulence. The harvest, the longest in the estate's history. We realize how fortunate we are to be vinifying for the first time in the new vat room, a modern, state-of-the-art, eco-responsible building designed for precision vinification. It has proved to be a marvellous tool for managing the multiplicity of situations created by localized storms during the season. As a result, we harvest according to the ripeness of each plot. The vats, of which there are nearly 60 with varying volumes, enable us to vinify each plot individually at the best moment. The 100% gravity-fed vat room gives us time to infuse, to Extraire gently, preserving the integrity of both fruit and wine. The team's excitement is palpable. This exceptional tool, perfectly adapted to our terroir, opens up new horizons for us. A new era for Cantenac Brown.
