Château Prieuré-Lichine

Château Prieuré-Lichine

Le Château Prieuré-Lichine is a discreet building in the heart of the Margaux appellation, whose wines reflect the grandeur of the sublime terroir. Domaine was founded in the 12th century by the monks of Vertheuil Abbey, and was then known as Prieuré de Cantenac.

Le Château Prieuré-Lichine became a Fourth Grand Cru Classé in the famous 1855 classification at the Paris World's Fair.

In 1951, Alexis LicHine, a Russian-American wine merchant nicknamed the "Pope of Wine", acquired it and added his name to it two years later. With patience and persistence, he endowed Domaine with new terroirs and modernized its facilities, taking it to the top. Today it belongs to the Ballande group, boasts a new vat room enabling bespoke vinifications that reveal the Extraordinary potential of its terroir.

The vineyard covers a surface area of 78 hectares, planted with 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, destined for the production of the grand vin and Second vin, Confidences de Prieuré-LicHine. The wines are aged for 14 to 16 months in oak barrels, 40% of which are new.

For the past few years, 2.2 hectares have been dedicated to the production of the Blanc du Château Prieuré-Lichine, planted with 70% Sauvignon blanc and 30% Sémillon.

The Château Prieuré-Lichine offers wines renowned for their precision, gourmandise and finesse.

Description Château Prieuré-Lichine 2023.

"This flagship of the Margaux appellation boasts a brilliant garnet-red color and a refined, bright nose dominated by fresh fruit. Raspberry, cherry and strawberry blend harmoniously. Floral notes add depth after aeration. On the palate, it is mellow and full-bodied on the attack, then reveals silky tannins. The body is well structured and the aromas concentrated. The tasting ends with a long, savory finish." - Marie, Oenologist Premium Grands Crus - April 2024

Faithful to the profiles of the wines produced at Prieuré-LicHine, for nearly 10 years, the 2023 vintage, once again reveals our Margaux identity and fervently affirms our singularity. Our DNA lies in the immense mosaic of soils spread across the 5 communes of the Appellation. Careful selection of these different terroirs allows us to optimize their complementarity and perfect our signature. This year's weather conditions demanded a high degree of resilience and responsiveness. The challenge was enormous!

The mild winter of 22-23 gave us a peaceful start to the season. The vine's various physiological stages were able to follow the classic calendar. The situation tightened in June with a hot and humid month, calling for extreme vigilance and increased mobilization of our teams to protect our vineyards from mildew, among other things. This capricious and testing vintage eventually eased up under the heat of summer, allowing a homogeneous veraison and revealing ripe, well-balanced berries.

The Merlot harvest began on September 13 and ended on October 4 with the Cabernets at optimum ripeness. To our great surprise, the rapidly harmonious and balanced wine profiles led us to reduce the maceration time by several days. Concentrated and refined, the Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the final blend, bringing power and refinement. Far from the superlatives used for recent vintages, 2023 unabashedly asserts the classicism of the great wines of Bordeaux.
