Château Rauzan-Ségla

Château Rauzan-Ségla

The Château Rauzan-Ségla reflects the richness and elegance of the finest Margaux wines. It was in 1661 that Pierre Desmures, a Bordeaux merchant, acquired the house of Gassies, which was split into two more than a century later: Château Rauzan-Gassies on the one hand and Château Rauzan on the other.

The latter became Rauzan-Ségla under the aegis of Baron Pierre-Louis de Ségla's daughter. The wine of Domaine seduced Thomas Jefferson in 1787, future president of the United States and ambassador to Paris. So much so that he ordered several cases for himself and on behalf of George Washington.

The Château Rauzan-Ségla was named Second Grand Cru Classé in the famous 1855 classification for the Paris Universal Exhibition. Owned by Chanel since 1994, the 70-hectare vineyard is planted on priceless terroir. The soils are composed of deep, fine clay gravel, planted with 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The wines are aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new.

The Domaine produces a Second wine, Ségla, which expresses itself nicely but with less depth than its elder brother.

Born of precision and passion in both vineyard and cellar, the wines of Château Rauzan-Ségla have great finesse and structure, allowing the purity of the fruit to shine through throughout their length.

Description Château Rauzan-Ségla 2023.

More elegant than fleshy, more controlled than opulent, the 2023 vintage is striking in its complexity and balance. A wine that wears its red color to the eye, nose and palate. Fresh, ripe red of redcurrant and blackcurrant. Fresh, floral red of rose in the morning. The woody red of cedar. Spicy red of aguaribay pepper. Sophisticated in character. Demanding in proportion and harmony. Sap, fruit and flowers converge in the same delicacy. And relief, to be sure. A synthesis of what mineral, vegetal and know-how do best when they meet the challenge.

Harvest : September 7 to 15 for Merlot, September 15 to 29 for Cabernet-sauvignon and September 19 to 20 for Petit verdot.

Almost prophetically, Cabernet-Sauvignon is the centerpiece of the vintage. In ten years' time, the vineyard too will have given it a prominent place. Deep heart, relief. Its batches are of great delicacy.

In terms of climatic conditions, the winter was mild dry, with regular rainfall and warm temperatures in spring. An eventful summer : between hot, cool, stormy episodes and then dry. Finally, a warm autumn at the start of the harvest. Two rainy spells brought a little freshness.

Ageing : 18 months with 55% new barrels.

Vinification by parcel and within parcel, in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats.
