Château Chasse-Spleen

The Château Chasse-Spleen is an emblematic Domaine vineyard located in the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation, in the Bordeaux region. Famous for the exceptional quality of its wines, Château has a rich history and benefits from a unique terroir.

The history of Château Chasse-Spleen dates back to the 18th century, when the Foixe-Bordeaux family founded the estate. However, it was in the 19th century that Château began to make a name for itself, thanks to the Cruse family, who acquired the property in 1850. The Cruses, a family of Bordeaux merchants, invested in the vineyard and facilities, improving the quality of the wines produced by Château.

Over the generations, the Cruse family have passed on their know-how and commitment to quality viticulture. Today, Château is still run by members of the Cruse family, continuing a centuries-old winemaking tradition.

The terroir of Château Chasse-Spleen is an essential element in the quality of its wines. The vines extend over nearly 90 hectares of gravelly soils characteristic of the Médoc region. These gravelly soils offer excellent drainage and encourage deep rooting of the vines, allowing the grapes to express their full potential.

The vineyards of Château Chasse-Spleen are planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot grapes, which are well adapted to the region's climate and terroir. Harvesting is carried out by hand, enabling... See more ...

Description Château Chasse-Spleen 2023.

Normally, autumn and winter are used to replenish the water tables. However, winter is low in humidity and very mild - too mild. A dreaded bud burst, which, coming too early, would be mowed down by the first frosts.

A heavy rain finally arrived, but a little too late. Vegetation had appeared, diverting rainfall away from the water table.

Spring frosts from early April to mid-May made us fear the worst, which we reduced in part by pruning very late.

From May to June, rain and heat go hand in hand: a tropical atmosphere. Alas, it's the mildew that takes the lead.

Closing of the bunch puts a stop to it. Temperatures are rather mild in July and August.

Just before harvest, the Cabernet Sauvignon sweats and its berries shrink visibly.

Once again, the vine surprises us with its resilience, producing a typical, fruity Médoc.

Tasting: Dark garnet with violet highlights. After swirling, light notes of tarragon, umami, minerals, hearth and pencil. In the mouth: supple tannins, structured by a fine, enveloping grain. Persistent, fragrant, iodized finish.
