Vieux Château Certan is one of the most prestigious vintages of the Pomerol appellation, rich in a great know-how allowing a work of goldsmith. Since 1924, it belongs to the Thienpont family, very present in the great vineyards of the Rive droite of Bordeaux. Alexandre Thienpont and his son Guillaume are currently in charge of it, devoting all their passion and love in order to produce ever more pure and richly elegant wines, a mission that seems almost impossible as the quality of the wines has already reached its peak for a long time.
Vieux Château Certan is based on a vineyard of 14 hectares of vines in a single block, planted on the plateau of Pomerol made up of clay, gravel and sand, with a high content of iron dross in the subsoil. The grape varieties are 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are aged for 18 months in 100% new oak barrels.
The Gravette Certan is the Second wine produced on the property.
Vieux Château Certan produces wines of infinite richness and seductiveness, renowned for their suppleness, freshness, and persistence.
Elaborated from fifty-year-old vines, the wines of Vieux Château Certan are fleshy and velvety. The 2012 vintage is adorned with a magnificent, almost black garnet color. On the nose, it has an intense bouquet of black cherry, blackberry and plum. A hint of graphite appears after aeration, as well as a slight smokiness. On the palate, the wine is highly concentrated from the outset. The mid-palate is ample and the tannins are perfectly integrated, giving a very silky feel. Black fruit flavors mingle with vanilla aromas. The relatively long finish suggests superb ageing potential.
