Château Mouton Rothschild

The Château Mouton Rothschild is known to all wine lovers, not only for its exceptional wines but also for its labels signed by artists since the 1945 vintage.

The story of Mouton Rothschild began in 1853, when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild bought Château Brane-Mouton from Pauillac, renaming it Mouton-Rothschild. In 1922, his great-grandson Philippe de Rothschild took over the reins for the next 65 years, and it was he who raised Mouton Rothschild to the pinnacle of its glory thanks to his determination and doggedness. A quest for excellence pursued by his daughter, Baroness Philippine.

By an official decree issued in 1973 by Jacques Chirac, Minister of Agriculture at the time, Château Mouton Rothschild would be declared the fifth Ier Grand Cru Classé, alongside Château Lafite-Rothschild, Château Haut-Brion, Château Latour and Château Margaux.

Today, Baroness Philippine's three children manage Domaine, always remaining faithful to the work of their grandfather and mother. Domaine remains a place of art and beauty, thanks to its spectacular vat room and its famous Musée du Vin dans l'Art, which brings together the unique exhibition "L'Art et l'étiquette" with works by famous contemporary artists (Francis Bacon, Dali, Braque....the... Description Château Mouton Rothschild 2016.

2016 is a magnificent wine year in Bordeaux, where the vines started in good conditions thanks to a mild spring. After a homogeneous flowering in June thanks to a beautiful sunshine, the summer turned out to be hot and dry, and as a result the vineyard evolved superbly. The beautiful months of September and October allowed us to offer berries of a very high oenological quality for a hand-sewn harvest.

Blend of the 2016 vintage: 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot.

The color is a very intense dark color, almost black, with subtle garnet highlights.

The nose reveals a sumptuous bouquet with floral nuances mixed with wild berries, cardamom, blond tobacco and toasted wood. What an olfactory spectacle.

The attack is rich and precise, revealing a fleshy and voluminous body where layers of black fruits, coffee and spices follow one another. The tannins are finely chiseled, making it rise in power while conferring freshness. The finish is long, racy and with a lively acidity. A great Mouton Rothschild particularly successful.

Food and wine pairing:

Château Mouton Rothschild 2016 will go well with stuffed veal medallions, a Chateaubriand with a truffle sauce, a rack of lamb in a herb crust, boar confit but also a roast pheasant.

For a pairing with cheese, choose uncooked pressed cheeses: Edam, Gouda, Saint-nectaire, morbier, Tomme de Savoie or Salers.

For dessert, it will be exquisite with Yann Couvreur's Caribbean dessert, a Russian or a chocolate layer cake.

Ageing potential and tasting:

Château Mouton Rothschild 2016 has tremendous cellaring potential. It can wait in the cellar for several more years to refine itself. Its peak will be reached between 2036 and 2040.

However, it can wonderfully be appreciated at its true value now. To do so, take care to place the bottle the night before in the serving room at a temperature between 15 and 18°C and to open it. If not, open it and decant it ideally 6 to 7 hours before tasting.

The bottles should be kept in the cellar in a dark place, lying down, with an optimal hygrometric degree of 70%.
