Château d'Armailhac

The Château d'Armailhac is one of the most famous Domaines in the Pauillac appellation. Having belonged to the d'Armailhacq family since the 18th century, it was awarded the title of Fifth Grand Cru Classé in the famous classification of Médoc wines for the Paris Universal Exhibition.

It was acquired by Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1933, who named it "Mouton-Baron-Philippe". In 1975, when his daughter Baroness Philippine took over its management, it became "Mouton-Baronne-Philippe". Finally, she decided to restore its identity, permanently naming it Château d'Armailhac in 1991.

Located on gravel and clay-limestone soils, its vineyard covers 76 hectares of vines, of which 55% are Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 8% Cabernet franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The wines are aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new.

The Château d'Armailhac is a wine that combines power and refinement, complexity and elegance, with a beautiful aromatic expression typical of Pauillac.

Description Château d'Armailhac 2018.

Climatic conditions

Heavy rainfall, violent hail storms during the winter gave way to a spring with much milder temperatures - that's how we might describe the first half of 2018.

The cool weather of March was followed in April by very mild weather, which benefited the vegetative cycle, bringing flowering forward slightly, and was reinforced in June by a warm, sunny period that brought the cycle forward by 5 days.

High humidity, coupled with ambient heat in July, made it difficult to maintain the health of the vines, and it was only through constant effort that our teams were able to pRéserver all the qualities of the vineyard. Fortunately, warm weather Sec then set in for three months, with temperatures sometimes exceeding 30°C, putting a definitive stop to mildew attacks.

Although the first six months of the year were not conducive to a good harvest, the record amount of sunshine, low rainfall and relative dryness that set in during the summer made for a very good harvest: the berries were small but exceptionally rich in sugar and tannin.

Given the advanced vegetative cycle and a hot summer Sec, harvesting began at the end of August for the white grapes and early September for the reds.

At Château d'Armailhac, harvesting began with Merlot on September 12 and ended on October 3 with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.

The wines have great color and excellent tannic structure. They are remarkably dense and velvety, with aromatic concentration Rare. Due to the drought, production quantities are down, but the vintage is already one of our greatest successes.

Tasting notes

La robe is deep with garnet highlights.

The first nose is rich and dense, revealing aromas of blackberry and marzipan. On aeration, the initial fruitiness extends to a palette of spices and dark chocolate.

The attack is powerful and structured, revealing peppery and slightly mentholated notes. The mid-palate reveals elegant, dense tannins, followed by roasted, liquorice nuances.

The long, suave finish is the hallmark of a wine of remarkable harmony.
