One of the most beautiful Châteaux of the Médoc, with its slender turrets reflected in a mirror of water, producing a great wine in its image. Such is the Château Pichon Baron on the edge of the Pauillac appellation.
It was in 1694 that Baron Jacques Pichon de Longueville, first president of the Parliament of Bordeaux, gave his name to this vineyard of great reputation, which he acquired by marriage with the heiress of the De Rauzan family. He took care before his death to separate Domaine into two parts: one would become Château Pichon Baron and go to his two sons, and while the other would become Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse, intended for his three daughters.
The Château Pichon Baron will obtain the rank of Second Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification established for the Paris World's Fair.
Today it stands on a sumptuous terroir of quaternary gravels that face the Gironde estuary. With a surface area of 73 hectares, it is planted with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The wines are aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 80% of which are new.
The Domaine has been producing a Second wine since 1983, the Tourelles de Longueville, and another since 2012, the Griffons de Pichon Baron.
The wines of Château Pichon Baron embody the purest expression of Pauillac, harmoniously combining finesse and elegance, as well as purity and depth.
PRESENTATION
Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is one of the estate's two Seconds wines. Created from the
2012 vintage, it has a pure, straightforward character. The grapes that make up the blend for this wine come mainly from gravelly plots near the Gironde estuary, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. Les Griffons is an invigorating, fresh, full-bodied, straightforward and energetic experience. This wine can be cellared for over 20 years, but can be enjoyed now.
THE MILLENNIUM
- A mild autumn Sec, followed by a cold, wet winter.
- Abundant rainfall perfectly recharged the soil's useful Réserve water content. At 456 mm, we recorded 30% more rainfall than in 2022.
- Early April: budburst and an episode of frost on April 5 with limited consequences.
- Spring was generally Sec warm. Flowering took place under very good weather conditions.
- Tropical weather at the start of July, followed by a hot end to the month (Sec), with no heatwave.
- Early August: cool, cloudy weather with beneficial rains helped maintain high levels of acidity in the berries.
- Nice ripening with warm weather conditions, and some beneficial rain on September 20, particularly for the Cabernets.
HARVESTING
Harvesting took place from September 12 to October 4:
- merlot from September 12 to 22,
- cabernet Franc on September 16 and 21,
- petit Verdot on September 19,
- cabernet Sauvignon from September 23 to October 4.
VINIFICATION
Maceration temperatures ranged from 25 to 27°C. The Extractions were preferentially placed in the heart of fermentation, and daily tastings refined the duration of post-fermentation maceration. Merlot run-off took place from September 30 to October 12, and Cabernet from October 10 to 24. Malolactic fermentation proceeded rapidly under marc, allowing regular entonnage in separate batches. Interment ended on November 4. 2023 is characterized by pure, fresh and precise fruit. The wine's profile is characterized by a balance between tension and power. We find the fruit and finesse of the 2019 vintage as well as the power and length of the 2020.
AGEING
