Château Pontet-Canet

Château Pontet-Canet

Perched on the heights of the Pauillac appellation, Château Pontet-Canet is one of the Médoc's most essential crus. Its founder, Jean-François de Pontet, esquire to the king and governor of the Médoc, acquired it in 1725, and a few years later his heirs bought the neighboring land at Canet: thus was born Château Pontet-Canet.

Le Domaine was awarded the title of Cinquième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 wine classification officialized for the Paris Universal Exhibition. A decade later, it was acquired by Herman Cruse, a Bordeaux merchant of Danish origin, and underwent a complete renovation.

It wasn't until Guy Tesseron, who already owned Château Lafon-Rochet to Saint-Estèphe, bought it in 1975 that Domaine began to shine again. His son Alfred would reveal the Extraordinary potential of his terroir from 1994 onwards, converting Domaine to biodynamic farming in particular, thanks to the support of his steward and trusted man Jean-Michel Comme.

Today, it's his daughter Justine Tesseron who continues his work, making Pontet-Canet shine on the wine scene.

Today, Château Pontet-Canet reigns over an 81-hectare vineyard, entirely managed according to biodynamic principles since the 2004 vintage. This makes Domaine a forerunner and benchmark in the world of Bordeaux Grands Crus Classés. It was certified by the Biodyvin and Ecocert labels in 2010, then by the Demeter label in... See more ...

Description Château Pontet-Canet 2023.

Although the winter was colder than normal and relatively Sec, March marked a change with above-average temperatures and rainfall replenishing the soil's Réserves of water. This milder weather led to early budburst in the vines at the end of March. The following months were marked by local and sometimes violent weather episodes, making the wine-growing season unpredictable.

The months of April, May and June were less rainy than usual, but with well-distributed rainfall, favorable to vine growth. Flowering took place under ideal conditions, with promising harvest potential. The month of June was warm and Sec promising an early harvest.

The first week of July was rainy, allowing the vines not to suffer too much from stress. Veraison arrived rapidly in July. Summer weather conditions were favorable for vine development right up to harvest.

To limit the impact of rain during the harvest, we stopped working the soil as soon as the grapes had ripened, leaving the grass to compete with the vines. Despite heat waves in August and September, harvesting began early, with meticulous sorting of the grapes.

The delicate choice of harvesting the Cabernet Sauvignon was influenced by the weather forecast, but in the end, the risk was taken and the harvest was a success. The harvest ended in ideal conditions in October, with a promising vintage characterized by balanced structure and aromatic expression.

Harvest: from September 28 to October 10 under ideal conditions.

The 2023 harvest was not only the earliest, but also the longest in the history of Pontet-Canet. In the cellars, the grapes naturally express all their structure. A few pump-overs at the start of fermentation are all that's needed. The vintage gives off all its complexity, structure and aromatic expression without difficulty, so there's no need to go looking for an unnecessary surplus - it's all about balance and freshness.

The gamble paid off!
