Château Bouscaut

Château Bouscaut

In the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, Château Bouscaut displays its beauty and harmony with a three-century-old vineyard. It is a property that has belonged to the Lurton family since 1979, and is now managed by Sophie Lurton and her husband Laurent Cogombles. Everything is done to express the quintessence of this great Graves terroir, from the renovation of the cellars in 2010 to the meticulous and attentive management of the property's parcels.

The Château Bouscaut is classified as red and white in the Graves wine classification, and has a 50-hectare vineyard planted on gravel and clay-limestone soils.

- The red grape varieties are 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Malbec. The ageing of the great wine is 18 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new. Les Chênes de Bouscaut is the Second red wine.

- The white grape variety is 50% Semillon and 50% Sauvignon Blanc. The great white wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new. Les Chênes de Bouscaut is the Second white wine.

The wines of Château Bouscaut are characterized by their charm and greed. The white wine is powerful and mineral, the red wine has a nice balance of fruit, spice and roundness.

Description Château Bouscaut 2023 - White.

One of Bouscaut's special features is the plot of Semillon du Thil, planted at the end of the 19th century, just after the phylloxera epidemic. It forms the heart of the blend for our first wine, thanks to its immense concentration and fabulous length. Aware of its quality, we carried out a massal selection to plant the new parcels of Semillon and thus pRéserver the specificities of Bouscaut. Sauvignon Blanc, which accounts for a slight majority of our blends, brings balance and a fine, sharp line, revealing itself earlier than Semillon.

For this 2023 vintage, which is our last year of conversion to organic farming, the whites held up very well against the mildew pressure that was the great challenge of the vintage. The Sauvignon Blanc was harvested between August 25 and September 9, on 50 hectares, while the Semillon was picked from September 5 to September 13. 2023 is also the first year of our collaboration with oenologist Thomas Duclos. He encouraged us to assert the Bouscaut style by pushing the ripening of the grapes on the limestone to intensify the mid-palate, the amplitude, supported by a beautiful freshness in a concern for balance. Length and ageing potential are essential. An average vine age of 50 years. Aged on lees in 400-liter barrels with one-third new wood for 10 months. Halfway through, the wine is topped up with a batch aged in amphorae, giving it the tension and balance we're looking for.

The absolute elegance of the 19th-century label seemed perfectly suited to our grand vin; its modernized version is adopted from the 2022 vintage. Both traditional and modern, with a timeless feel, it fits our image as a family cru. We're now working on the Bouscaut brand.
