Château Haut-Brion

The Château Haut-Brion enjoys a reputation that goes back centuries, a model of longevity and excellence resulting from an exceptional terroir. The first traces of Domaine date back to 1525, when Jean de Pontac, a notable member of parliament in Bordeaux, received it by marriage and began building Château in 1549, at the same time increasing the size of the vineyard.

Served at the tables of the kings of England, as attested by a 1660 archive, Château was the first to appear under its cru name, "Ho Bryan", as Samuel Pepys, a member of the English Parliament, put it in his diary in 1663.

In the famous 1855 classification, Château Haut-Brion was the only Domaine from the Graves region to appear, as the 1st Grand Cru Classé, sharing this distinction with four Domaines: Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour as well as Château Mouton Rothschild since 1973.

Bought in 1935 by American banker Clarence Dillon and run today by his descendant, Prince Robert du Luxembourg, Château Haut-Brion is based on a 51-hectare gravel vineyard: 48ha in red dedicated to the production of the grand vin and Second vin, Clarence de Haut-Brion (44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 12% Cabernet franc and 2% Petit Verdot), and 3ha in white dedicated to the production of the grand vin blanc Sec (52% Sémillon and 47% Sauvignon blanc).

The grand vin rouge of Château Haut-Brion is a wine of extraordinary intensity, complexity and velvety power. As for the white wine it produces, it is reputed to be Sec de Bordeaux's greatest white wine, mineral and unctuous.

Description Château Haut-Brion 2018.

The 2018 vintage is a great wine year for the Bordeaux vineyard. The spring saw some rainfall, but the milder month of June allowed the vines to flower beautifully. The summer is hot and dry, very beneficial to the good development of the vine, and the magnificent months of September and October offer the perfect conditions for the maturation of the grapes.

Blend of the 2018 vintage : 49.4% Merlot, 38.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11.9% Cabernet Franc

The color is an almost black purple, bewitching and with brilliant garnet highlights.

The nose is balanced, greedy and complex, with notes of jammy black fruits, redcurrant, peppery spices and cardamom.

The attack is mellow, to reveal a dense and voluminous texture supported by fine and particularly elegant tannins. Fruity, juicy and incredibly fresh, it has a long and exquisite finish.

Food and wine pairing:

Château Haut-Brion 2018 should be paired with meat dishes, such as pepper-crusted beef, venison jig with grand veneur sauce, roast venison in a crust, or rack of lamb.

The cheeses that will make him the most beautiful part are the morbier with truffle, the Edam, the mimolette or the Salers.

Finish it off with a chocolate dessert, such as a mi-cuit or entremets, or a pear and raspberry charlotte.

Cellaring potential and tasting:

Château Haut-Brion 2018 is a great wine for aging par excellence, with its peak between 2040 and 2045.

In order to fully appreciate it today, it is advisable to open and decant the bottle 6 to 7 hours before tasting, in the serving room at room temperature.

The bottles will be kept in the cellar, protected from light, lying down, at an optimal hygrometric degree of 70%.

The care we take when receiving wines in our cellars enables us to detect bottles with imperfections (dirty or faded labels, damaged capsules, etc.). In such cases, they are systematically set aside and never put online! Our preparation team selects only bottles with perfect presentation for your orders!

It is these bottles with slight external defects that we present to you in the "Existe en imparfaite" selection. These bottles are, of course, of "irreproachable" gustatory quality, but suffer from slight defects on the label or cap. We therefore offer them at a preferential price, making the pleasure of tasting them even more affordable.
