Château Angelus

The Château Angelus and its famous carillon overlooking the surrounding vineyards is an essential reference for the Rive droite de Bordeaux.

The history of Château Angélus is intimately linked to its geographical location, as it was the only place around the village of Saint-Emilion where you could hear the sound of the angelus (L'Angélus in the singular, Christian prayer of the Western Catholic Church) from three surrounding churches: the Mazerat chapel, the church of Saint-Martin and the church of Saint-Emilion.

In 1782, Jean de Boüard de Laforest settled in Saint-Emilion, and his daughter Sophie settled on the Mazerat vineyard, owned by Charles Souffrain, whom she married in 1795. The de Boüard de Laforest family would thus remain at the head of Domaine, and it was Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, an oenologist by training, who would contribute to its great renown from 1985 onwards, by introducing innovative practices. His daughter Stéphanie joined the adventure in 2012, embodying the eighth generation. The passionate management of Château Angélus year after year is above all a family affair.

The Château Angélus was named Grand Cru Classé when the Saint-Emilion classification was created in 1955, due to the great... See more ...

Description Château Angélus 2019.

The 2019 vintage is a year synonymous with a great enthusiasm for Bordeaux red wines, which has resulted in remarkable results and Chateau Angelus is no exception to the rule. Given the variability of situations that the vineyard experienced for this season, including a very hot summer and alternating cool nights and sunny days in September and October, today we can say that it is a great vintage for the property. The grapes were extremely qualitative.

The robe reveals a dark red color, almost black, with elegant ruby reflections.

It opens with an intense and very fine nose of red rose, raspberry and blackberry, followed by crème de cassis, cocoa and spices.

The wine is mellow as soon as it enters the mouth, and very quickly reveals a lot of density, roundness and concentration. We feel bursts of jammy black fruits, spices and vanilla wood. The tannins are noble, making it rise in power and depth until a long refined finish.

Food and wine pairing:

Château Angélus 2019 will pair beautifully with a meat dish featuring truffles, either in pieces or in sauce, to support its great finesse. Prefer a tender piece of beef such as an onglet or a châteaubriand. It can also be served with small game, such as hare, or a famous roast pigeon.

If it is to be served with cheese, choose uncooked pressed cheeses such as Cantal, Gouda, Mimolette and Saint Nectaire. Its melted tannins will go very well with it.

In terms of dessert, enjoy it with a Grand Cru chocolate tartlet or an Opera cake.

Ageing potential and tasting:

This wine will probably reach its qualitative peak between 2035 and 2045, and successive tastings should be done to measure its evolution as well as its qualitative peak.

To be served at room temperature, taking care, if possible, to open the bottle the night before so that the wine can open as well as possible. If not, open it the same day and decant it 6 to 7 hours before tasting.

The bottles should be kept in the cellar in a dark place, lying down, with an optimal hygrometric degree of 70%.

ROSES2025

The care we take when receiving wines in our cellars enables us to detect bottles with imperfections (dirty or faded labels, damaged capsules, etc.). In such cases, they are systematically set aside and never put online! Our preparation team selects only bottles with perfect presentation for your orders!

It is these bottles with slight external defects that we present to you in the "Existe en imparfaite" selection. These bottles are, of course, of "irreproachable" gustatory quality, but suffer from slight defects on the label or cap. We therefore offer them at a preferential price, making the pleasure of tasting them even more affordable.
