A sure-fire, must-try value, Maison Deutz has decidedly everything to please, offering numerous Champagnes as fine as they are irresistible. Spanning 45 hectares of vineyards around the town of Aÿ, mainly classified as Premier Cru and Grand Cru, Maison Deutz demonstrates an authentic style with the purest respect for traditional methods and environmental issues.
La Maison de Champagne Deutz was founded in 1838 in Aÿ by William Deutz and Pierre-Hubert Geldermann, who were born during the First Prussian Empire and immigrated to France in 1830. William was already selling Champagne while Pierre-Hubert was a wine merchant, so they combined their skills to found their own trading house. Initially specializing in exports, mainly to Germany, they eventually invested in some of the finest vineyards in the region, to gain total control over the production of their own Champagne. Thus was born Maison Deutz. Very quickly, Champagnes Deutz would become internationally recognized for their refinement and become associated with prestige.
Generations followed one another within Maison Deutz, until 1993 when it was bought out by the Rouzeau family, shareholders in another no less famous Champagne house, Louis Roederer.
The vineyard of Maison Deutz today reaches a size of 45 hectares of vines, planted mainly on terroirs classified as Premier Cru and Grand Cru. The soils are made up of chalk, marl and limestone, with a semi-continental and... See more ...
Inspired by the bronze cherub from which it takes its name, Cuvée Amour de Deutz is an exceptional Rare, a unique and divine expression of Chardonnay. Housed in a luxurious gift box, it comes with a jewel-like muselet designed by Pascal Morabito.
This cuvée is created when the fairies of Champagne so decide. Then, with the wave of a magic wand over the cradle of Chardonnay, the miracle happens: the heart and passion of the men, combined with the alchemy of the terroirs, give birth to a pure and immaculate wine, delicate and bewitching, the quintessence of the grape variety.
A late ripening vintage, 2013 benefited from a radiant, sunny summer, ideal for ripening Chardonnays. This slow ripening in late summer and early autumn produced taut, energetic wines with long evolutionary potential.
For this cuvée Amour de Deutz 2013, the grapes come mainly from the Grand Cru terroirs of Côte des blancs: Avize (39%), Oger (24%), and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger (22%). Villages Premier Cru de Vertus (10%) and Villers-Marmery / Trépail (5%) complete the blend.
The wine is a beautiful light gold color. A fine effervescence, the result of over 7 years' ageing in the depths of cellars Deutz, slowly emerges. The nose is splendid, with gourmet notes of fresh butter, citrus and candied lemon. Subtle hints of eXOtic fruit and white flowers add to the aromatic range, in a complex, refined whole.
On the palate, there's a perfect balance between ample, generous structure and lively mineral tension, balanced by subtle dosage. Fruity and floral aromas fill the palate, in a wonderful aromatic palette of yellow stone fruit, kumquat and a subtle note of orange blossom. The finish is pure and persistent, energetic, chalky and iodized.
A Extraordinary wine to be enjoyed now with ginger-flavored sea bream or Bresse chicken with preserved lemon, but one that allows for several good years of cellaring and will evolve gracefully (magnum format helping).
