Château Smith Haut Lafitte

Château Smith Haut Lafitte

Le Château Smith Haut Lafitte is one of the must-have names in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, dubbed the "most Graves of Graves" due to the atypical nature of its terroir. Domaine was founded in 1365 and was then named Haut Lafitte for its geographical location.

Then, when Georges Smith, a merchant of Scottish origin, acquired it in the 18th century, he added his name to it and built the Carthusian monastery we know today.

Grand Cru Classé in red in the Graves classification, Château has been owned since 1990 by Daniel and Florence Cathiard, who for several years have been committed to a bio-precision approach that combines innovation and traditional techniques in both vineyard and cellar. The wines are produced organically without chemical inputs, enriched with biodynamic methods that contribute to the expression of the terroir.

The Château Smith Haut Lafitte is based on a 78-hectare vineyard planted on an exceptional Pyrenean gravel hilltop.the red grape varieties are 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The grand vin is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 30% to 60% of which are new. Petit Haut Lafitte is the Second red wine.

 - The white grape varieties are 90% Sauvignon blanc, 5% Sauvignon gris and 5% Sémillon. The grand vin blanc is aged for 12 to 15... See more ...

Description Château Smith Haut Lafitte 2023.

"The nose is very expressive, with beautiful notes of red and black fruit, a lovely blend of morello cherry, blueberry and blackcurrant. After swirling, a spicy dimension becomes predominant with notes of clove, licorice and eucalyptus, followed by darker, empyreumatic notes with hints of graphite and pencil lead. A superb aromatic complexity typical of the great soils of Graves. The attack on the palate is frank and direct, with good density and superb texture. The wine is full-bodied, dense and well-balanced with freshness. The tannic structure is present and ripe, with a beautiful texture and velvety touch. The aromas on the palate mirror those on the nose, with a beautiful complexity of red and black fruits, spices, as well as hints of tobacco leaves and eucalyptus. And always those notes of graphite, very characteristic of our Smith Haut Lafitte. A very fine vintage combining power and elegance with a refined tannic structure" Fabien Teitgen, Technical Director

Vinification: whole berries in small wooden vats at 28°C, Extra very gentle punching down by hand.

Ageing: 18 months in barrels (60% new barrels made in our integrated cooperage), aged on lees, single racking then ageing adjusted for each wine.

Average age of vines: 49 years.

The care we take when receiving wines in our cellars enables us to detect bottles with imperfections (dirty or faded labels, damaged capsules, etc.). In such cases, they are systematically set aside and never put online! Our preparation team selects only bottles with perfect presentation for your orders!

It is these bottles with slight external defects that we present to you in the "Existe en imparfaite" selection. These bottles are, of course, of "irreproachable" gustatory quality, but suffer from slight defects on the label or cap. We therefore offer them at a preferential price, making the pleasure of tasting them even more affordable.
