Commonly known for its high quality and famous yellow-orange label, Maison Veuve Clicquot has never ceased to be daring since its founding in 1772, in the image of the woman who founded its fame.
She who was nicknamed the "Grande Dame of Champagne" will indeed have become one of the first businesswomen in history, but beyond that, she will have offered an international dimension to her Champagnes that she cherished so much.
It was in 1772 that Philippe Clicquot founded his house of Champagne in Reims. He was succeeded by his son François, who married a certain Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin in 1798. When François died prematurely in 1805, Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin found herself at the head of the Champenoise house, and over time proved to be particularly gifted in business. She achieved the feat of maintaining an international distribution network, something very Rare for the time and a testament to her doggedness, and made her Champagnes known throughout Europe among the royal courts, including as far afield as that of the Tsars of Russia.
Success continued over the following centuries, and in 1987 Maison Veuve-Clicquot became part of the LVMH luxury goods group, making it the world's second best-selling Champagne. Veuve-Clicquot's Champagnes have thus never lost their timeless style and great finesse.
... See more ...This cuvée was created to pay tribute to Madame Clicquot, an illustrious figure at the wine estate, who used all her expertise to develop it. This iconic cuvée is a blend of 90% Pinot Noir from the wine estate's historic vineyards, to which a little red wine from the "Clos Colin" plot in Bouzy is added.
Salmon-colored, brilliant with a lovely effervescence, the cuvée offers a powerful and complex nose. Floral notes of rose and violet mingle with citrus notes of mandarin and red fruit notes of raspberry and blackcurrant. After a few minutes of aeration, more subtle notes of clove, nutmeg, toasted bread, and black tea develop. On the palate, the cuvée seduces with its purity. The attack is full-bodied and very refined, carried by vibrant acidity. The red fruits are crisp and clean, enriched by nuances of orange zest, pomegranate, and a hint of black tea. The whole combines richness, depth, and tension. The finish is long and racy, leaving an impression of complex freshness with lingering red fruits, a slight salinity, and an elegant zesty bitterness.
La Grande Dame Rosé stands out for its refined, harmonious and luminous style, a true expression of Veuve Clicquot's expertise.
