As one of Saint-Emilion's leading vineyard references, Château Canon la Gaffelière embodies the excellence of the great wines of Rive droite de Bordeaux. Situated at the foot of the slope south of the village of Saint-Emilion, this is a vineyard whose existence can be traced back to the 17th century.
But its modern history is inextricably linked to the German noble family of Counts Von Neipperg, who acquired it in 1971. It's a family that has always had an unshakeable link with viticulture, and today Stephan Von Neipperg strives to keep this vineyard and its exceptional terroir at the top of its game, with passion and respect for the environment. In fact, the estate has been certified Organic since 2014.
The Château Canon la Gaffelière was named Grand Cru Classé when the Saint-Emilion classification was created in 1955. It was not until the 2012 edition that it was awarded the title of Premier Grand Cru Classé, confirming the greatness of its wines.
The Château Canon la Gaffelière looks after a 19.5-hectare vineyard planted on clay-limestone and sandy-clay soils at the foot of the hillside. The grape varieties are 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are aged for 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 50 to 80% of which are new.
The estate produces a Second wine, Hauts de Canon La Gaffelière.
The Château Canon la Gaffelière delivers wines of great finesse, elegance, structure and complexity, which leave an indelible impression on anyone who appreciates them.
The 2018 vintage is synonymous with viticultural success for the Bordeaux vineyard and in particular for Rive droite, having offered a harvest of great quality. The beginning of the season was rather wet, but this was offset by a magnificent, sunny summer, which was very beneficial to the development of the vines. The months of September and October enabled the berries to achieve concentration, color and aromatic richness.
2018 vintage blend: 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.
La robe is a deep, dark, almost black color with violet highlights.
The nose offers power, freshness and aromatic concentration, with notes of forest fruits, black cherry and violet, as well as white pepper and orange blossom.
The attack is supple, and the wine quickly reveals a creamy texture and plenty of volume. Carried by exquisitely fine tannins, it builds in power, offering lovely flavors of red berries and pepper. It finishes with precision on a long, lingering finish that leaves you wanting more. A great vintage of Canon La Gaffelière.
Wine and food pairing:
Château Canon la Gaffelière 2018 will be particularly appreciated with pork filet mignon with Port, beef with onions, rack of lamb confit or a simple dish of fresh tagliatelle with truffles.
For a cheese pairing, opt for uncooked pressed cheeses: Edam, Gouda, Saint-nectaire, morbier, Tomme de Savoie or Salers.
For dessert, the pairing is sublime with a dark chocolate fondant mi-cuit, a coffee tart or a tiramisu.
Ageing potential and tasting:
Château Canon la Gaffelière 2018 is by definition a great nectar for laying down, and deserves several more years in the cellar to improve. It will reach its peak between 2030 and 2035.
However, it lends itself wonderfully to tasting today, as 2018 is a vintage of excellent drinkability. To do this, place the bottle in the serving room the evening before at a room temperature of between 15 and 18°C.
Open and decant ideally 4 to 5 hours before tasting.
Bottles should be stored in a dark cellar, lying down, at an optimum humidity level of 70%.
