Located at the entrance to the Saint-Julien appellation, the architecture of Château Beychevelle has earned it the nickname of the "Versailles of the Médoc". It was the stronghold of the Ducs d'Epernon, and notably of the first of them, Jean-Louis Nogaret de La Valette, Grand Admiral of France.
The strategic position of Château on the banks of the Gironde enabled them, according to legend, to force ships sailing up the river to pay a octroi, a kind of toll. Ships had to lower their sails as a sign of allegiance. Beychevelle thus takes its name and emblem, a ship with a griffin bow, from the old Gascon name Bêcha Vêla, meaning "Lower Sail".
Built in the 17th century, rebuilt by the Marquis de Brassier in 1757, the Château was restored to its original splendor at the end of the 20th century. In the meantime, it has been awarded the title of Fourth Grand Cru Classé in the prestigious 1855 classification published for the Paris Universal Exhibition. Today, the property belongs to Grands Millésimes de France.
The Château Beychevelle vineyard is planted on deep Garonne gravel soils, covering 92 hectares of vines planted with 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet franc. The wines are aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 60% of which are new.

The 2018 vintage was a play in two acts.
A WET FIRST PART OF THE SEASON..
The cold and particularly rainy winter of 2018 gave the soil precious Réserves of water for the rest of the season. The mild, wet spring was favorable to vine development... but also to mildew. Particularly careful monitoring of the vines was necessary to avoid losing the harvest.
A VERY DRY AND SUNNY SECOND HALF OF THE SEASON!
Exceptionally, four sunny months Secs followed one another right up to the harvest. Without suffering from drought, thanks to the rainfall accumulated during the first period, and alternating cool nights and warm days, the vines benefited from optimal climatic conditions to produce fresh, concentrated grapes.
A SERENE HARVEST
Weather conditions at harvest time were ideal.
Each plot was harvested at full ripeness and found its place in the new vat room, perfectly adapted to the plot. The blend features the four Bordeaux grape varieties, perpetuating the elegant style of Château Beychevelle.
2018, HARMONY AND CONCENTRATION
Beychevelle 2018 can be summed up in two words: Harmony and Concentration. This vintage presents a Rare balance that has been achieved at this stage. The bouquet of ripe red and black fruits invites us to discover an intense, harmonious palate.
Very silky tannins carry a fruit bursting with freshness and concentration. 2018 joins the list of great vintages of Château Beychevelle.
Château Beychevelle has been committed to environmentally-friendly practices for many years.
