Domaine Leroy

The history of Maison Leroy began in 1968 when François Leroy, winemaker and owner of vineyards in Pommard, Meursault, Chambertin, Musigny, Clos de Vougeot and Richebourg, decided to create a structure with the aim of expanding.

During the second part of the twentieth century, his son's efforts were rewarded with various medals and Grands Prix in both France and Belgium. However, it was not until the arrival of Henri Leroy in 1919, the third generation, that things really changed. Highly invested in the business, he led it to a meteoric rise.

A few years later, in 1942, Maison Leroy became the owner of half the shares in Romanée-Conti's Domaine. Henry would devote the rest of his life to the estate, giving his all to create the jewel we know today.

Lalou Bize-Leroy, Henri's daughter and a grande dame of the Burgundy wine world, joined the adventure in 1955. She quickly followed in her father's footsteps, becoming President and General Manager of Maison Leroy as well as co-manager of Romanée-Conti Domaine. An unrivalled taster and connoisseur of the terroirs of Bourgogne, she will always strive for the best. This quest for perfection led her in 1988 to buy several Domaines and cultivate them biodynamically, making her a pioneer in the field.

Topping out at 21 hectares 99 ares 66 centiares, Domaine Leroy today boasts 9 Grands Crus, 8 Premiers Crus, 9 Villages and a few generic Bourgognes. With its racy terroirs, it offers us each vintage confidential cuvées of incredible richness.

Description Maison Leroy Vosne-Romanée 2017.

"The Bourgogne has done nothing better than this little corner where it has gathered its enchantments and put into its wines the tender generosity of its genius." These words by Burgundy writer Gaston Roupnel illustrate the magic behind the Vosne-Romanée appellation, located on either side of Grands Crus such as La Romanée, Romanée-Conti, Richebourg or La Tâche. The genius of this terroir combined with the genius of Lalou Bize-Leroy make this nectar a unique wine.

Each wine produced by Maison Leroy is a gustatory event, and this Vosne-Romanée 2017 is no exception. After the drought of 2015 and the frost of 2016, the 2017 vintage put a smile back on the faces of Burgundy's winegrowers with fairly decent yields. The year progressed without any major difficulties and the grapes were harvested in good health and in most cases with good levels of ripeness.

A discreet nose hides behind an intense vermeil color, as if intimidated... Once tamed, this then reveals in successive waves aromas of perfectly ripe strawberries, blueberries and blackcurrants, rose petals, roasted cocoa and a myriad of spices. We're drawn back to it again and again. Divine.

The palate reveals Pinot Noir in all its fullness, a touch austere with tannins galore but wonderfully silky. Imposing, noble tannic architecture, an iron hand in a velvet glove. The fruit is intense and pure, and the balance between richness and finesse is perfect. A persistent finish coats the tongue with a silken fabric filled with juicy fruit, and leaves a mineral, sapid and stony sensation on the palate.

A wine to be decanted without fail, for several hours on end, and which will reveal all its charms accompanied by roast partridges barded with bacon or a grandmother's roast pheasant.
