Klein Constantia

Founded in 1685, this Domaine enjoys a rich history and a worldwide reputation for wines of exceptional quality, particularly its famous dessert wine, Vin de Constance.

The history goes back to Simon van der Stel, the founder of the Cape of Good Hope, who established a farm on these lands in 1685. Domaine was christened Constantia in honor of van der Stel's daughter. Over the centuries, Domaine has gone through various phases of prosperity and adaptation, but its commitment to grape quality and winemaking tradition has persisted.

One of the most remarkable eras is associated with Vin de Constance, a sweet dessert wine that gained worldwide renown in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was prized by European royal courts, including that of Frederick the Great of Prussia and Napoléon Bonaparte. After a period of decline in the early 20th century, Vin de Constance was revitalized in the 1980s, and today is considered one of the world's finest dessert wines.

The Domaine covers around 146 hectares, with vineyards nestled on the slopes of the eastern side of the Constantia mountain. The region's particular microclimate, influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, provides ideal conditions for growing high-quality grapes. Grape varieties grown include Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Muscat de Frontignan, and others well adapted to the unique terroir.

The Jooste family has played a key role in the renaissance of Klein Constantia. In 1980, the family acquired Domaine with a clear vision to restore its past gLoire. Since then, a dedicated team of winemakers and oenologists have worked in harmony to produce world-class wines that reflect the distinctive character of the region.

The wine portfolio is not limited to Vin de Constance. The Domaine also produces white and red wines, all characterized by a pure expression of terroir. Modern winemaking methods are combined with a deep respect for tradition, creating wines that are balanced, elegant and representative of the very essence of the wine-growing Cape.
