Klein Constantia

Klein Constantia is an iconic Domaine winery located in the heart of South Africa's Cape Winelands.

Founded in 1685, this Domaine enjoys a rich history and a worldwide reputation for wines of exceptional quality, particularly its famous dessert wine, Vin de Constance.

The history goes back to Simon van der Stel, the founder of the Cape of Good Hope, who established a farm on these lands in 1685. Domaine was christened Constantia in honor of van der Stel's daughter. Over the centuries, Domaine has gone through various phases of prosperity and adaptation, but its commitment to grape quality and winemaking tradition has persisted.

One of the most remarkable eras is associated with Vin de Constance, a sweet dessert wine that gained worldwide renown in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was prized by European royal courts, including that of Frederick the Great of Prussia and Napoléon Bonaparte. After a period of decline in the early 20th century, Vin de Constance was revitalized in the 1980s, and today is considered one of the world's finest dessert wines.

The Domaine covers around 146 hectares, with vineyards nestled on the slopes of the eastern side of the Constantia mountain. The region's particular microclimate, influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic... See more ...

Description Klein Constantia Vin de Constance 2015.

Even more impressive than the magnificent 2014, Vin de Constance 2015 is one of the greatest vintages of this iconic sweet wine, made from Muscat de Frontignan grapes. Aged in French and Hungarian oak barrels, as well as a touch of acacia wood, for 3 years before bottling.

The result is worthy of the world's greatest liquoreux: La robe deep gold is bright and lively. Perception on the nose is exuberant and explosive, with fruity aromas of ripe citrus, tangerine peel, stewed apricots, sultanas and kumquat. Other complex aromatic layers follow: rosewater, pine needles, honey and tropical touches of mango and pineapple. On aeration, notes of vanilla, cinnamon and dried flowers also emerge.

On the palate, the balance of fruit and acidity is breathtaking. More Barsac-like than Sauternes in terms of power, it's fresh and refined, with citrus and orange zest balancing the residual sugar (173 g/liter). The sweetness of the sugar is accompanied by notes of orange blossom, poached pear and sultanas. The splendid, long finish features notes of pineapple, orange zest, sweet spices, and acidity that tingles the palate and contributes to freshness.

Pure, Extraordinary and magically legendary, this wine from Constance is one of the world's most consistent dessert wines. Drink it now, knowing that it will evolve and improve with time, over several decades... It goes perfectly with blue-veined cheeses, such as Roquefort, as well as all citrus desserts.
