Guy Charlemagne

The Champagne Guy Charlemagne embodies the excellence and heritage of a family dedicated to creating exceptional Champagnes.

Founded by Guy Charlemagne himself, this house of Champagne is located in the village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, in the heart of Côte des blancs, one of the most renowned wine-growing regions of Champagne.

The history of the Charlemagne family goes back several generations, when Guy Charlemagne decided to continue the family tradition of winemaking. Driven by his passion for vines and wine, he created his own Champagne house in 1892 and laid the foundations for a line of winemakers dedicated to excellence.

The Côte des blancs terroir is at the heart of the Champagnes Guy Charlemagne identity. The vineyards cover almost 18 hectares, mainly located in villages classified as Grand Cru appellation, including Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger and Cramant. The chalky terroir of Côte des blancs is particularly well-suited to the cultivation of the Chardonnay grape variety, enabling the production of Champagnes of great elegance and characteristic freshness.

The Charlemagne family attaches great importance to integrated viticulture and the preservation of the environment. The vines are worked with care, favoring nature-friendly practices and minimizing the use of chemicals.... See more ...

Description Guy Charlemagne Mesnillésime 2015.

This Mesnillésime 2015 cuvée is a 100% Chardonnay, from a parcel around sixty years old. It's located, as its name might suggest, in the village Grand Cru of Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the chalkiest soils in Champagne. Just scratch the soil a few centimetres and you'll find chalk. The Chardonnay that grows here has an insane minerality and it takes many years for it to fully express itself.

The year 2015 offered us a hot summer and Sec that caused water stress, but fortunately some welcome rain in August kick-started the progression of ripeness. Heatwave years can make Chardonnay very heterogeneous, ranging from vegetal if harvested too early, to heavy if harvested too late. The strong minerality of the Mesnil-sur-Oger terroir has enabled us to produce a very high-quality harvest.

This Blanc de blancs is vinified partially in oak barrels, without malolactic fermentation in order to retain all the minerality and purity of the Chardonnay. It ages 6 years in the cellar and, after disgorgement receives a low dosage of 3g/L, it's a Extra brut.

This Champagne has a pale golden yellow color with green highlights. The nose is intense and elegant, starting with notes of acacia honey, candied lemon and mixed peppercorns, then evolving to brioche, citrus and a light iodine/smoke note. The palate is unctuous and complex with its aromas of precious woods, candied citrus and finishes on a long, fresh, vanilla note.

This Mesnillésime 2015 cuvée from Maison Guy Charlemagne will bring finesse and freshness to a Capon à la crème and its morel puff pastry. But swimming scallops will also make a perfect match.
