Château Pape Clément

The Château Pape Clément is one of the oldest properties in the Bordeaux vineyard, with seven centuries of history and born of the passion of a pope. It was at the end of the 13th century that Bertrand de Goth received from his brother Bréaud de Goth, as a gift for his appointment as archbishop of Bordeaux, a property located in Pessac planted with vines.

Bertrand de Goth was elected Pope in 1305 and took the name Clement V. He renamed his Domaine Pope Clement.

Grand Cru Classé in red in the 1953 Graves classification, Domaine has belonged to Bordeaux businessman Bernard Magrez since 1983. With determination and passion, he has led Pape Clément into the sphere of the greatest Bordeaux wines. Respect for the environment, the use of drones to follow the evolution of the vines, made-to-measure vinification, from the vine to the cellar nothing is left to chance to ensure that the potential of this exceptional terroir is expressed.

Le Château Pape Clément is a 63-hectare vineyard planted on an exceptional hilltop of Pyrenean gravel.

- The red grape varieties are 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. The grand vin is aged for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 70% of which are new. Clémentin de Pape Clément is the Second red wine.

 - The white grape varieties are 74% Sauvignon blanc, 22% Sémillon, 3% Sauvignon gris and 1% Muscadelle. The... See more ...

Description Château Pape Clément 2023 - White.

Château Pape Clément is one of the oldest Grands Crus of Bordeaux. Its vineyards were planted in the 13th century by Bertrand de Goth. Archbishop of Bordeaux, he became Pope in 1305, under the name of Clement V. The Château is named after him. This Domaine has been producing wine on the same land since 1252.

The harvest

The harvest began on August 23 with our Sauvignon Gris and ended on October 3 with our last Cabernet Sauvignon, after 29 days of painstaking work - a record length for Château Pape Clément!

With ripening dynamics varying widely from one plot to the next, it was essential this year to stagger the harvest so that all the grapes could gradually reach optimum ripeness. The decision to hand-pick each vine in several selections reflects our absolute commitment to excellence.

2023, a demanding vintage, where tenacity, adaptability and patience once again combine to produce a great vintage at Château Pape Clément!

In the white, our cool, clay terroir enabled us to pRéserver our grapes from the very hot conditions at the end of ripening, preserving the subtle aromas and tension of the Sauvignon, and allowing the Semillon to fully express its unrivalled velvety texture.

Vinification

Early but perfectly ripe, our white grapes are harvested at a quality Rare second to none. Gentle, fully inert pressing allows the musts to pRéserver their full purity and balance. They offer a smooth, minimalist fermentation in terms of intervention. Each plot and press fraction, vinified separately using barrels, foudres, concrete and ceramic eggs of various shapes and sizes, creates a unique canvas.

This diversity of choice, in terms of both quality and style, offers an infinite palette of blends. It allows us to create singular and fascinating white wines, worthy of the prestigious Château Pape Clément.

Age of vines: 23 years

Soil type: Pyrenean clay gravel table dating from the late Pliocene and early Quaternary periods.

The care we take when receiving wines in our cellars enables us to detect bottles with imperfections (dirty or faded labels, damaged capsules, etc.). In such cases, they are systematically set aside and never put online! Our preparation team selects only bottles with perfect presentation for your orders!

It is these bottles with slight external defects that we present to you in the "Existe en imparfaite" selection. These bottles are, of course, of "irreproachable" gustatory quality, but suffer from slight defects on the label or cap. We therefore offer them at a preferential price, making the pleasure of tasting them even more affordable.
