Château Angelus

The Château Angelus and its famous carillon overlooking the surrounding vineyards is an essential reference for the Rive droite de Bordeaux.

The history of Château Angélus is intimately linked to its geographical location, as it was the only place around the village of Saint-Emilion where you could hear the sound of the angelus (L'Angélus in the singular, Christian prayer of the Western Catholic Church) from three surrounding churches: the Mazerat chapel, the church of Saint-Martin and the church of Saint-Emilion.

In 1782, Jean de Boüard de Laforest settled in Saint-Emilion, and his daughter Sophie settled on the Mazerat vineyard, owned by Charles Souffrain, whom she married in 1795. The de Boüard de Laforest family would thus remain at the head of Domaine, and it was Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, an oenologist by training, who would contribute to its great renown from 1985 onwards, by introducing innovative practices. Description Carillon d'Angelus 2023.

The mild spring, with its regular rainfall, led to significant mildew pressure, which put the winegrowers to a severe test. This constant pressure imposed intense mechanical and prophylactic work to ensure the harvest and bring it to term. This was followed by a dry, sunny period, ideal for flowering, heralding a generous vintage.

During the cool summer, interspersed with thunderstorms, the vines never lack light or water; and thanks to rigorous and constant preventive action, the threat of parasites is totally under control.

Each vintage of Château Angelus is unique, revealing a new facet of the great terroirs from which our wines are made. The 2023 vintage continues the stylistic evolution begun in 2016. We're pushing back the boundaries of quality and exacting standards in small, subtle steps, tending towards greater elegance and finesse, with a quest for high definition and precision of line, balancing the power of our wines.

The colour is bright and brilliant. The nose is fresh and complex, with aromas of red fruits and delicate spicy and floral notes.

The palate, dominated by the tension and balance of the Merlot grapes, is energetic, aromatic and long-lasting, thanks to the freshness of the Merlot with its refined tannins.
