Château Lafite-Rothschild 2018
1er Grand Cru Classé en 1855.
Château Lafite-Rothschild
It's impossible to talk about the great wines of the Médoc without mentioning Château Lafite-Rothschild. A Domaine steeped in history, whose reputation and prestige are matched only by the legendary wines born there.
Ancient medieval seigneury, it was under Jacques de Ségur, from a family of Bordeaux parliamentarians, that the first vines were planted in the 1670's. The wine gradually acquired an excellent reputation thanks to technical progress, at the royal court of Versailles but also across the Channel with the expansion of trade with England. Then in 1787, Thomas Jefferson, US ambassador to France at the time, praised it in his travel notes.
The Château Lafite was promoted to the rank of Ier Grand Cru Classé in 1855 on the occasion of the Paris Universal Exhibition, a distinction it shares with the Château Latour, Château Haut-Brion and Château Margaux, as well as the Château Mouton Rothschild since 1973.
The subsequent rise of Château Lafite owes much to the Rothschild family, with Baron James de Rothschild acquiring the estate in 1868 and attaching his name to it from that date. When Baron Eric took over the reins in 1974, everything was gradually put in place with the aim of modernizing and improving performance, in order to reveal the exceptional potential of the terroir. Description Château Lafite-Rothschild 2018.
The 2018 vintage is undoubtedly a very good vintage for the Bordeaux vineyard. After a cool and wet spring, a magnificent summer marked by sunny days and high temperatures allowed the vines to develop well, foreshadowing a beautiful future harvest. At harvest time at Château Lafite Rothschild, the berries presented an excellent oenological quality.
The 2018 vintage is also the 150th harvest for Domaines Baron de Rothschild.
Blend of the 2018 vintage: 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Merlot, 0.5% Petit Verdot.
The color is dark and deep, almost black, adorned with purple highlights.
The nose offers precision and intensity, marked by beautiful notes of black fruits, cherry and violet, followed by truffle, cedar of Lebanon and peppery spices.
The attack is suave, giving way to a fleshy and dense body that caresses the palate with a delicate touch. Flavors of red berries are harmoniously blended with balsamic notes, and it rises to a crescendo in power thanks to very fine tannins. It blooms on a noble, long and fresh finish. A great vintage for Lafite Rothschild.
Food and wine pairing:
Château Lafite Rothschild 2018 will wonderfully accompany a pressé of beef cheek in red wine with roasted butternut and carrots, a lamb fillet with country flavors, a squab bastilla in two cookings, a roasted saddle of venison or a veal mignon with cardamon.
For a match with cheese, choose uncooked pressed cheeses: Edam, Gouda, Saint-nectaire, morbier, Tomme de Savoie or Salers.
For dessert, it will be particularly exquisite with Yann Couvreur's Caribbean dessert, a black forest or an Opera cake.
Ageingpotential and tasting:
Château Lafite Rothschild 2018 is the archetypal great wine for aging, able to wait between 2040 and 2045 to reach its peak, and even beyond.
However, it can be enjoyed today if properly prepared. To do so, take care to place the bottle the night before in the serving room at a temperature between 15 and 18°C. Open and decant the bottle ideally 6 to 7 hours before tasting.
The bottles should be kept in the cellar, protected from light, lying down, at an optimal hygrometric degree of 70%.
