The Château Clerc Milon is one of the most sublime wines in the Pauillac appellation. The lands of Domaine were included in those of the Lafite seigneury as early as the 18th century. In the aftermath of the French Revolution, Château Milon, in reference to the hamlet of Pauillac where it stood, was sold as national property and acquired by the Clerc family, who thus associated their name with it.
The Château Clerc Milon was awarded the title of Cinquième Grand Cru Classé in the famous 1855 classification for the Paris Universal Exhibition.
In 1970, it entered a new era when it was bought by Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Today, the estate is managed by his 3 grandchildren, who bring out the full potential of its exceptional terroir year after year, thanks to state-of-the-art technical facilities and great expertise.
Situated on sandy gravel and clay-limestone soils, the vineyard covers 41 hectares of vines, including 53.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot and 1.5% Carmenère. The wines are aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, of which 50% are new.
The estate produces a Second wine, Pastourelle de Clerc Milon.
The wines of Château Clerc Milon are precise, complex and finely structured, where the brilliance of the fruit is expressed.
2020, great elegance and silky tannins, one of the great success stories of the last decade.
Climatic conditions
Thanks to a particularly mild winter and an early spring with temperatures well above normal, the vines budded about ten days earlier than the multi-year average. Fortunately, the passage of a snow front at the end of March had no impact on the vineyards.
Spring continued with above-normal temperatures, punctuated by abundant rainfall, particularly in early May. The return of warm, dry, anticyclonic conditions in mid-May significantly accelerated the vegetative cycle, particularly at flowering, which was 12 days ahead of its usual cycle.
A more contrasted June gave way to an early summer marked by heat waves and drought, particularly noticeable in July. August, on the other hand, saw a few rainy spells, activating the veraison process and helping to even out berry development.
On the eve of the harvest, the grapes were in perfect health. Favored by exceptional anticyclonic conditions and a rise in temperatures bringing forward ripening for all grape varieties, the 2020 harvest is historically early.
At Château Clerc Milon, harvesting took place from September 9 to 28 under ideal weather conditions. The perfect quality of the berries enabled us to produce well-balanced wines, characterized by fleshy mouthfeel, powerful but melted tannins, and great freshness on the palate.
In the absence of generous volumes, the quality of the wines allows us to project the 2020 vintage among the great successes of the last decade.
TASTING NOTES
La robe is a deep cherry red with garnet highlights.
Velvety and silky, the attack reveals a tactile sensation combining depth, density and great elegance. The mid-palate is rich and suave, revealing aromas of blackcurrant and blueberry, underlined by a beautiful freshness on a framework of refined, coated tannins.
The harmonious finish is distinguished by persistent fruity and mineral notes.
