The location of Château Grand Puy Ducasse is very special, as it offers the unique feature of being entirely urban, right in the heart of Pauillac and facing the Gironde.
Archives reveal its existence in the 17th century, and its owner at the time added his name Ducasse.
Grand Puy Ducasse is divided into three parts: one part neighbors the Mouton-Rothschild and Lafite-Rothschild vineyards, another part is located at the very place of Grand Puy from which it takes its name, and finally another part on the St Lambert plateau along the Gironde estuary.
This Château covers an area of 40 hectares consisting of siliceous-gravelly soil and subsoil and Garonne gravel, with vines of an average age of 25 years.
Varietal composition: cabernet sauvignon 60%, merlot noir 40%.
Annual production is in the order of 160 to 170 barrels, or 200 to 210,000 bottles.
All harvesting is done by hand and the wine is aged in new barrels in the proportion of 30 to 40%, depending on the vintage for 12 to 16 months before bottling.
MILLESIME CLIMATOLOGY
The year began with a mild winter, dry marked by 2 weeks of cold at the end of January. Temperatures remained mild throughout the spring, allowing the vines to bud evenly from March 29. An early vintage was on the cards, but at the end of April, the vegetative cycle slowed under the effect of cooler temperatures. The Gironde estuary played its vital role as a thermal regulator during the 3 consecutive days of frost that spared the vineyards. Summer conditions in May and June favored uniform flowering (full bloom on May 29). The vines continued to develop serenely, without any particular sanitary pressure, an undeniable asset for the management of the 45 hectares of organic viticulture. The rainy spell at the end of June meant that veraison began on July 21. After a temperate summer (Sec), the September rains accelerated the ripening process. The 4 grape varieties reached full ripeness in a very short time. The harvest took place under ideal conditions.
TASTING COMMENTS
The Grand-Puy-Ducasse 2017 is medium to deep garnet-purple, with aromas of crushed red and black currants, black cherries and blackberries, with hints of earth, meat and herbs. Medium-bodied, it is firm and robust on the palate with muscular fruit and a savory finish.
