Château Haut-Brion

The Château Haut-Brion enjoys a reputation that goes back centuries, a model of longevity and excellence resulting from an exceptional terroir. The first traces of Domaine date back to 1525, when Jean de Pontac, a notable member of parliament in Bordeaux, received it by marriage and began building Château in 1549, at the same time increasing the size of the vineyard.

Served at the tables of the kings of England, as attested by a 1660 archive, Château was the first to appear under its cru name, "Ho Bryan", as Samuel Pepys, a member of the English Parliament, put it in his diary in 1663.

In the famous 1855 classification, Château Haut-Brion was the only Domaine from the Graves region to appear, as the 1st Grand Cru Classé, sharing this distinction with four Domaines: Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour as well as Château Mouton Rothschild since 1973.

Bought in 1935 by American banker Clarence Dillon and run today by his descendant, Prince Robert du Luxembourg, Château Haut-Brion is based on a 51-hectare gravel vineyard: 48ha in red dedicated to the production of the grand vin and Second vin, Clarence de Haut-Brion (44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 12% Cabernet franc and 2% Petit Verdot), and 3ha in white dedicated to the production of the grand vin blanc Sec (52% Sémillon and 47% Sauvignon blanc).

The grand vin rouge of Château Haut-Brion is a wine of extraordinary intensity, complexity and velvety power. As for the white wine it produces, it is reputed to be Sec de Bordeaux's greatest white wine, mineral and unctuous.

Description Château Haut-Brion 2017.

Elegant and complex, the red wine of Château Haut-Brion is very mineral and complex, with a surprisingly long finish. Rare, this aromatic persistence is the privilege of great origins.

Tasting notes

Beautiful deep red color with violet highlights. The first nose leaves an impression of great finesse and full maturity.

On agitation, the wine reveals its complexity, with notes of ripe fruit, spices and licorice. Already very "Haut-Brion". On the palate, the wine is broad and tight, subtle but not harsh. It then evolves in a delicious way, with coated tannins that stretch the wine to impressive length.

In the end, the capricious nature of 2017 was incredibly generous.

The climate

A warm, sunny spring accelerated vine growth, which began on March 13. Two bouts of frost at the end of April reminded winegrowers that their art is fragile and nature indomitable.

Water deficit was a key factor in the vintage, reaching as much as 50% in July and August. However, significant rainfall in June protected the plant from this drought. Above-average sunshine, very hot days (29 days over 30°C), tempered by cool nights (allowing the vines to ripen without stress) were the year's other favourable factors.

We find all this in the richness of our wines, which have also retained the freshness essential to the balance we seek. The month of September - with the exception of the second week, when the hoped-for rains gave the Cabernets a peaceful end to their cycle - favored the harvest, which was carried out in very good conditions.

2017 has all the qualities to become a benchmark vintage.

The care we take when receiving wines in our cellars enables us to detect bottles with imperfections (dirty or faded labels, damaged capsules, etc.). In such cases, they are systematically set aside and never put online! Our preparation team selects only bottles with perfect presentation for your orders!

It is these bottles with slight external defects that we present to you in the "Existe en imparfaite" selection. These bottles are, of course, of "irreproachable" gustatory quality, but suffer from slight defects on the label or cap. We therefore offer them at a preferential price, making the pleasure of tasting them even more affordable.
