Le Château Fombrauge is a fine reference from the Saint-Emilion vineyards. The origins of Domaine date back to the 16th century, when the first harvests were carried out here. It passed through several hands over the following centuries, from religious orders to large families, before being acquired in 1999 by Bordeaux businessman Bernard Magrez, nicknamed "the man with 40 vineyards".
The latter will help to elevate it to the rank of the great wines of Rive droite, combining ancestral know-how and precision viticulture.
The Château Fombrauge will be named Grand Cru Classé at the 6th edition of the Saint-Emilion classification in 2012, a status that will confirm its qualitative excellence.
The Château Fombrauge is based on a 60-hectare vineyard planted on clay-limestone soils. The grape varieties are 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet franc. The wines are aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new.
The Château Fombrauge illustrates one of the finest expressions of Saint-Emilion, thanks to fruity, silky, elegant wines of great freshness.
Rich in six centuries of history, it embodies the elegance of the Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Émilion. This 2021 vintage, made from vines with an average age of 23 years, is distinguished by a balance between tradition and innovation, both in viticultural practices and in winemaking.
Terroir and vines
The vineyard is planted on clay-limestone soil with molasses from the Agenais and Fronsadais regions, a terroir that gives the wine elegant structure and great aromatic complexity. The grape varieties are 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, bringing roundness and freshness to this wine. Vineyard management is optimized thanks to technical itineraries specific to each plot, combining cutting-edge technologies such as Greenseeker, drones and robotics, enabling viticultural practices to be adjusted with a view to improving quality and the environment.
Climatic conditions 2021
The 2021 vintage was marked by variable seasonality. Autumn was mild and wet, followed by a warm, wet winter. Spring brought frosty spells and cool, rainy weather. Summer was cool and wet, influencing the ripening of the grapes. Harvesting took place between September 30 and October 18, 2021, with Merlot from September 30 to October 7, followed by Cabernet Franc from October 7 to 18.
Tasting
This wine has an intense, brilliant color. The nose reveals complex aromas of ripe black fruit, sweet spices and a subtle floral touch. On the palate, the texture is silky, with a fine tannic structure. The Merlot provides volume and generous roundness, while the Cabernet Franc offers freshness and liveliness. The finish is long, marked by balanced acidity and mineral notes.
The Château Fombrauge 2021, under the signature of Bernard Magrez and consulting oenologist Michel Rolland, testifies to the mastery of viticultural and oenological practices.
