Opus One

Opus One, an iconic wine born of the alliance between two great wine families, Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, embodies elegance, tradition and excellence.

Founded in 1979, Domaine has fused the expertise of these two renowned winemaking dynasties to create a wine of exceptional quality.

The story begins with a meeting between Robert Mondavi, a California wine pioneer, and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, owner of the prestigious Château Mouton Rothschild in France. Their shared vision was to create a wine that would unite the best characteristics of traditional Bordeaux grape varieties with the unique terroir of California's Napa Valley.

The Domaine spans some 67 hectares, located in the heart of Napa Valley. The vines are carefully cultivated to encourage the optimal expression of Bordeaux grape varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. The emphasis is on sustainability and preserving the natural balance of the vineyard.

Each vintage is the fruit of a meticulous, artisanal approach to winemaking. Grapes are hand-picked and carefully sorted to select only the very best. Vinification and barrel-ageing techniques are inspired by Bordeaux traditions, while incorporating modern innovations to create a subtle balance between power and finesse.

Description Opus One 2016.

Opus One is a classic that needs no introduction. For decades, it has offered wine lovers the world over a class and structure not unlike the giants of Bordeaux Rive gauche.

Matured for 18 months in new French oak barrels, this 2016 demonstrates once again that this was a magical vintage for Napa Valley. This Extraordinary wine is mostly built on Cabernet Sauvignon (77%), combined with Merlot and Petit Verdot grapes (8% each), 5% Cabernet Franc and a touch of Malbec (2%).

Armorating a deep garnet-purple color, Opus One 2016 explodes from the glass with exuberant aromas: ripe blueberries, black cherry jam, crème de cassis, as well as splendid floral scents evoking violets. Noble empyreumatic notes of graphite and dark chocolate emerge. This bewitching ensemble is refreshed by touches of cedar, cardamom, rosemary and laurel.

Bodied, rich and concentrated, the palate delivers opulent layers of stewed black fruits with astonishing tension. The tannins are quite firm but very ripe and fine-grained. The finish is Extraordinarily long, pure and elegant, lingering at length with a range of eXOtic spices and elegant touches of dark chocolate and coffee.

It can be enjoyed now (decant), or cellared over a good two decades, and will be a source of immense pleasure with a shoulder of lamb with herbs or oven-roasted squab.
