Grosperrin

The Cognac Grosperrin is a name that resonates with excellence and tradition in the world of Cognac. This family-owned company, founded by Jean Grosperrin, is renowned for its commitment to craftsmanship and the exceptional quality of its Cognacs. With a history that dates back over two centuries, Cognac Grosperrin is the fruit of a passion passed down from generation to generation.

The story of the Grosperrin family begins in the early 19th century, when Jean Grosperrin, a wine merchant, began producing and trading Cognac. Since then, the family has developed a unique expertise in selecting exceptional Cognacs from the region's finest Domaines.

What sets Cognac Grosperrin apart is its resolute focus on quality and authenticity. Unlike the big Cognac houses that produce blends, Grosperrin focuses on buying and maturing Cognacs from small, artisanal distilleries. These Cognacs are aged in oak casks in the traditional cellars of the Cognac region, where the mild, oceanic climate plays an essential role in the maturation process.

The terroir of the Cognac region is a key element in the quality of Cognacs Grosperrin. The vineyards lie on limestone soils, which give the grapes a unique mineral richness. What's more, the mild climate, tempered by the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, favors slow, steady ripening of the grapes, enabling the development of complex aromas of great finesse.

Description Grosperrin Héritage N°70/74 Brut de Fût.

Maison Grosperrin, located in Saintes, is now run by Guilhem Grosperrin, son of founder Jean Grosperrin. Guilhem travels tirelessly throughout the Cognac appellation area, meeting producers in search of exceptional Rares and bottling unique Cognacs. He takes advantage of his father's fantastic network of contacts, which he has expanded and developed to more than 150 partners.

The Cognac Heritage N°70/74 comes from the commune of Saint Genis de Saintonge, in the Bons Bois cru, from a picturesque estate where such Rares can still be found, preserved for decades, thus resisting inheritance. This venerable Cognac has aged slowly in a damp cellar, with a dirt floor, to soften naturally and reach a degree of 42.7% Alc. without any reduction, it's a Brut de Fût.

The color is dark amber with golden highlights. It has lost some of its freshness with age, but retains the intensity of mango, fig and overripe red fruit. The long ageing process continues with primary notes of mushroom, wet soil and verbena, complemented by sandalwood, musk and cardamom. A light, discreet rancio finishes. The palate is deep and velvety, rich with roasted pineapple, Secs grapes, candied prunes and blond tobacco. The rancio is much more perceptible, even if it seems more rustic. In the absence of great persistence, the finish is of great intensity, with roasting, gingerbread, plum, quince, ginger and old butter.

This Cognac Heritage N°70/74 from Maison Grosperrin is old-fashioned charm, decadently balanced, yet endlessly addictive. It blends perfectly with canned fruit salads in syrup, favoring pears, peaches, apricots and "Reine Claude". But an escalope of duck foie gras pan-fried with saffron will also have its say! Sublime.
