Grosperrin

The Cognac Grosperrin is a name that resonates with excellence and tradition in the world of Cognac. This family-owned company, founded by Jean Grosperrin, is renowned for its commitment to craftsmanship and the exceptional quality of its Cognacs. With a history that dates back over two centuries, Cognac Grosperrin is the fruit of a passion passed down from generation to generation.

The story of the Grosperrin family begins in the early 19th century, when Jean Grosperrin, a wine merchant, began producing and trading Cognac. Since then, the family has developed a unique expertise in selecting exceptional Cognacs from the region's finest Domaines.

What sets Cognac Grosperrin apart is its resolute focus on quality and authenticity. Unlike the big Cognac houses that produce blends, Grosperrin focuses on buying and maturing Cognacs from small, artisanal distilleries. These Cognacs are aged in oak casks in the traditional cellars of the Cognac region, where the mild, oceanic climate plays an essential role in the maturation process.

The terroir of the Cognac region is a key element in the quality of Cognacs Grosperrin. The vineyards lie on limestone soils, which give the grapes a unique mineral richness. What's more, the mild climate, tempered by the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, favors slow, steady ripening of the grapes, enabling the development of complex aromas of great finesse.

Description Grosperrin 18 ans Ile d'Oléron Brut de Fût.

Maison Grosperrin, located in Saintes, is now run by Guilhem Grosperrin, son of founder Jean Grosperrin. Guilhem travels tirelessly throughout the Cognac appellation area, meeting producers in search of exceptional Rares and bottling unique Cognacs. He takes advantage of his father's fantastic network of contacts, which he has expanded and developed to more than 150 partners.

This Cognac comes to us from the Atlantic, and more precisely from the Ile d'Oléron. The island is also known as "l'île aux herbes", where the influence of the Gulf Stream and Mediterranean-style sunshine favor the presence of tamarisks, mimosa, rockroses, orange trees, oleanders, etc. The eaux de vie produced here are round and fruity, sometimes even iodized. Maison Grosperrin maintained an annual supply from an estate in Saint Pierre d'Oléron until its last harvest in 2007 (when it retired), before continuing the ageing process itself in its own cellars. This Cognac is from a new batch, made from the 2004 harvest and bottled in 2024. It is a Brut from barrel.

La robe of this Cognac is golden with old gold highlights. The nose is rich and dense, with aromas of peach, roasted pineapple, salted butter toffee, saffron and toasted oak. The palate is deep, complex and well-balanced. Ripe orchard fruit, rum-soaked grapes, buttery croissant and saffron again provide the tension, which carries through to a fresh finish.

This Cognac Ile d'Oléron 18 ans from Maison Grosperrin is very tender and subtle, and its sandy terroir is easy to identify. Pair it with an equally tender dish, such as fresh pasta with langoustines, spinach cream and saffron, or fine shortbread with melting apples.
